- He has mastered the treatment of complex heart disease under local anaesthesia without surgery, using soluble scaffolds, medicated stents, peripheral stents and device implants for heart failure. He was among the first few in the world to pioneer soluble stent technology for complex coronary artery disease and was the first in the world to implant soluble stents below the knee for diabetic foot.
- Dr. Merchant has large experience in whole-body angiography, especially in diabetics, and treats blockages in the carotid, renal, lower limb and below-knee arteries with stents. These minimally invasive procedures restore blood supply to the brain, kidneys and legs, and patients typically walk and go home within 24 hours.
- He was among the first in India to start a heart failure management programme with innovative devices and has published a pilot study on 75 heart failure patients and research on 100 patients treated with multi-vessel stenting in place of bypass surgery. In 2014 he published a book on his 25-year journey in cardiology.
- A gold medallist of the 1978 batch at KEM Hospital, he left KEM as a lecturer in cardiology in 1992. He holds fellowships of the European Society of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, and has delivered more than 500 CME lectures to doctors.
