Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Patch Aortoplasty (Coarctation Repair) in India
Surgical widening of a narrowed aorta (coarctation of the aorta) in babies, children and adults, done by experienced paediatric and adult cardiac surgeons at accredited Indian heart centres – at a fraction of Western costs.
📖 What is Patch Aortoplasty?
The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the whole body. In coarctation of the aorta (CoA), a heart defect present from birth, part of the aorta – usually just after the arteries to the head and arms – is too narrow. The heart must pump harder to push blood through. This causes high blood pressure in the arms, weak pulses in the legs and, if untreated, heart failure, stroke or aortic damage.
Patch aortoplasty is an operation that widens the narrow part of the aorta. Through a cut on the left side of the chest (thoracotomy), the surgeon clamps the aorta, opens it along the narrow area and sews in an oval patch (synthetic or from the patient's own tissue) to make it wider. Related operations include resection with end-to-end anastomosis and subclavian flap aortoplasty. Together these are called coarctation repair or aortoplasty.
🩺 Conditions Treated
⚠️ Signs That May Need Coarctation Repair
- ➤High blood pressure in the arms
- ➤Weak or delayed pulses in the legs
- ➤Big difference between arm and leg blood pressure
- ➤Poor feeding, sweating and fast breathing in babies
- ➤Headaches or nosebleeds
- ➤Leg pain or cold feet on exercise
- ➤Heart murmur
- ➤Shortness of breath or tiredness
🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Echocardiogram | Shows the narrowing, pressure gradient, heart function and other defects such as a bicuspid valve. |
| Four-limb blood pressure | Compares arm and leg pressures to judge the severity. |
| CT angiography or cardiac MRI | Gives exact 3D images of the aorta and collateral vessels to plan surgery. |
| ECG and chest X-ray | Check heart strain, rhythm and heart size. |
| Blood tests | Blood count, kidney and liver function, clotting and blood group. |
| Cardiac catheterisation (if needed) | Measures pressures and may be combined with balloon or stent treatment. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Types of Coarctation Repair
| Technique | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Patch aortoplasty | Narrow segment opened and widened with a patch | Long-segment narrowing or re-coarctation |
| Resection with extended end-to-end anastomosis | Narrow part removed and ends joined | Most infants and young children – preferred today |
| Subclavian flap aortoplasty | Left arm artery used as a flap to widen the aorta | Selected small infants |
| Interposition tube graft | A tube graft replaces the narrow segment | Adults and long or complex narrowing |
| Balloon angioplasty ± stent | Catheter through the leg widens the aorta | Older children, adults and re-coarctation |
📅 Your Day-by-Day Plan in India

| Day 2–3 | Cardiologist and surgeon consultation, echo, CT angiography and blood tests |
| Day 4 | Admission and patch aortoplasty surgery |
| Day 5–6 | Cardiac ICU monitoring; breathing tube removed |
| Day 7–9 | Ward care in a single room, walking and blood pressure control; discharge after 6 days |
| Day 10–16 | Rest at hotel, wound check and follow-up echo |
| Day 17–21 | Final review and fitness to fly – Fly home ✈️ |
🌱 Recovery After Treatment
🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Survival after isolated coarctation repair (children) | About 98–99% |
| Re-coarctation needing treatment | About 5–15% over the years (higher in newborns) |
| Fall in arm–leg pressure difference | Most patients immediately after surgery |
| Long-term high blood pressure | About 20–30% of adults, needing medicines |
| Late aneurysm after patch repair | Seen in a minority; regular imaging advised |
Results are best when coarctation is repaired early, before long-standing high blood pressure damages the heart and arteries. Age at surgery, other heart defects and the repair technique affect long-term outcome.
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
Like any medical procedure, this treatment carries some risks. Your specialist will explain them in detail before treatment:
- •Pain and wound problems at the chest incision
- •High blood pressure after surgery – common, usually temporary
- •Re-coarctation (narrowing returning) – about 5–15% over time
- •Aneurysm (bulging) at the repair site – mainly after synthetic patch
- •Chylothorax (lymph leak) or nerve injury to the voice box – uncommon
- •Bleeding needing re-operation – uncommon
- •Spinal cord injury from clamping – very rare (below 0.5%)
