📖 What is the Bentall Procedure?
The aorta is the main artery leaving the heart. Its first part, the aortic root, holds the aortic valve and the openings of the coronary arteries that feed the heart muscle. In some people – especially those with Marfan syndrome, a bicuspid (two-leaf) aortic valve or long-standing high blood pressure – the root and ascending aorta weaken and balloon out (aneurysm). A large aneurysm can tear (dissection) or burst, which is life-threatening. The stretched root also makes the aortic valve leak.
The Bentall procedure is open-heart surgery that replaces the aortic valve, the aortic root and the ascending aorta with a composite graft – a fabric tube with an artificial valve sewn inside. The coronary arteries are then re-attached to the new tube. It is done with the heart-lung machine. It is also called aortic root replacement or the modified (button) Bentall operation.

💡 A mildly enlarged aorta usually needs monitoring, not surgery. Blood pressure control (beta-blockers or ARBs) and yearly scans are advised until the aorta reaches the size limit for surgery.
