Know More About Procedure & Surgery
MitraClip (Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair) in India
MitraClip repairs a severely leaking mitral valve through a vein in the groin, without opening the chest or stopping the heart – for patients with significant mitral regurgitation who are at high risk for open-heart surgery. Done by experienced structural heart teams at accredited Indian hospitals, at a fraction of Western cost.
📖 What is MitraClip (Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair)?
The mitral valve sits between the left upper chamber (left atrium) and left lower chamber (left ventricle) of the heart. It has two flaps (leaflets) that close tightly with each heartbeat so blood flows forward to the body. In mitral regurgitation (MR), the valve does not close properly and blood leaks backwards into the lungs. Severe MR causes breathlessness, tiredness, swollen legs and heart failure, and can shorten life if not treated.
MitraClip, also called transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER), is a minimally invasive procedure. A thin tube (catheter) is passed from a vein in the groin up into the heart. Guided by 3D ultrasound from the food pipe (TEE) and X-ray, a small metal clip covered with fabric is attached to both leaflets where the leak is worst, joining them together and reducing the leak. The heart keeps beating throughout, there is no chest cut, and most patients walk the next day.

- ➤Breathlessness on exertion or lying flat
- ➤Waking at night breathless
- ➤Tiredness and weakness
- ➤Swelling of feet and ankles
- ➤Palpitations or irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)
- ➤Reduced ability to walk or climb stairs

🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) | Measures the leak severity, heart size and pumping strength (EF). |
| Transoesophageal echocardiogram (TEE, 3D) | Detailed view of valve anatomy to confirm the clip is suitable. |
| Coronary angiography | Checks for blocked arteries that may need treatment. |
| CT scan (selected cases) | Assesses anatomy if other transcatheter options are considered. |
| NT-proBNP, kidney function and blood tests | Assess heart failure severity and fitness for the procedure. |
| Heart team and surgical risk score (STS) | Cardiologist and surgeon decide together if MitraClip is the best option. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Treatment Options for Severe MR
| Option | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| MitraClip / TEER – single clip (this package) | One clip joins leaflets via groin vein | High surgical risk; leak in one area |
| MitraClip – two clips | Two clips for a wider leak | Broader leaks needing more coverage |
| Surgical mitral valve repair | Open or minimally invasive heart surgery | Younger, fit patients with degenerative MR |
| Mitral valve replacement (surgical or transcatheter) | Valve replaced with artificial valve | Valves not suitable for repair or clip |
| Optimal medical therapy | Heart failure medicines, CRT pacing | Functional MR, first-line |

| Day 4 | Admission and MitraClip procedure; about 1 day in ICU/CCU |
| Day 5–8 | Ward care, walking, echo check – discharge (3–5 days in hospital) |

🌱 Recovery After Treatment
🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Clip implant success | About 90–95% |
| Leak reduced to moderate or less | About 90%+ in modern series |
| 30-day mortality | About 1–3% |
| Heart failure admissions (COAPT) | Reduced about 47% at 2 years |
| Symptom improvement (NYHA class) | Most patients improve by 1+ class |
Results depend on valve anatomy, heart pumping strength, kidney function, how well heart failure medicines are taken, and the experience of the structural heart team. MitraClip improves symptoms and quality of life but does not cure heart failure, so medicines and follow-up remain essential.
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
MitraClip is much less invasive than open surgery, but it is still a heart procedure.
- •Groin bleeding or bruising (common, usually minor)
- •Need for blood transfusion (about 2–5%)
- •Single leaflet device attachment – clip detaches from one leaflet (about 1–2%)
- •Residual or recurrent leak needing repeat procedure
- •Narrowing of the valve (mitral stenosis) – uncommon
- •Stroke (about 1%)
- •Small hole in the atrial septum that usually needs no treatment
💰 Cost of MitraClip (TEER) in India
The cost of MitraClip (transcatheter mitral valve repair) in India starts from about USD 25,000 for a single-clip procedure in a twin-sharing room, including the original MitraClip device, procedure, anaesthesia, TEE guidance, about 1 day in ICU and 3–5 days in hospital. A single room or a second clip increases the cost.
| Option / Hospital tier | Approx. cost (USD) | Hospital stay | Notes |
