- He has performed more than 5,000 catheterisation procedures and has pioneered several cardiac procedures. His expertise includes coronary angioplasty; mitral, aortic and pulmonic balloon valvuloplasty, which widens narrowed heart valves without surgery; and catheter-based closure of VSD, ASD, PDA, fistulas and other abnormal shunts. He is credited with the world's largest series of non-surgical closures of ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (RSOV).
- Dr. Kerkar is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, the European Society of Cardiology and the Cardiological Society of India. He is a life member of the Cardiological Society of India and served as its Scientific Secretary in 2009-2010.
- He has conducted numerous interventional workshops, written articles for national and international peer-reviewed journals, serves on the editorial board of the Postgraduate Journal of Medicine and reviews for several national and international journals.
