Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Intracoronary OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) in India
Intracoronary Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT / IVOCT) is a high-resolution imaging test performed inside the heart arteries during angiography or angioplasty. It uses near-infrared light to create microscopic cross-section pictures of the artery wall - about 10 times sharper than intravascular ultrasound - helping the cardiologist choose the right stent size and confirm a perfect result.
Cost of intracoronary OCT in India starts from USD 1000 at leading JCI / NABH accredited hospitals. Add-on; no extra hospital days; total stay in india 3-10 days depending on main procedure.
| Package | Cost (USD) | Room | Hospital stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| OCT imaging add-on (with angiography or angioplasty) | 1000 USD | As per main procedure | No extra stay |
| Coronary Angiography + OCT | 1500 USD | Day-care | Day-care / 1 day |
| OCT-guided PTCA with 1 DES | 6200 USD | Twin Sharing | 2 days |
Final cost depends on the hospital, room category, doctor, number of devices used and the patient's medical condition. Share your reports with Satyug Healthcare for a free written estimate.
About the Procedure
- A thin OCT imaging catheter is passed over a guidewire into the coronary artery during an angiography or angioplasty.
- While contrast flushes away the blood for a few seconds, the catheter is pulled back automatically and records thousands of cross-sectional images.
- The images show plaque type (fat, fibrous, calcium), thrombus, vessel size, stent expansion and edge dissections in real time.
- OCT is an add-on to angiography or angioplasty and does not need a separate admission.
Purpose of the Procedure
- Accurately measure artery diameter and lesion length to select the correct stent size
- Identify calcium, clot or unstable (vulnerable) plaque
- Check stent expansion and apposition after angioplasty
- Investigate the cause of stent failure, re-narrowing or stent thrombosis
- Improve long-term outcomes of complex angioplasty (left main, bifurcation, long lesions)
Diagnosis and Tests Before the Procedure
- Prior coronary angiography or CT coronary angiography
- Kidney function test (contrast is used)
- ECG, 2D Echo and routine blood tests before the procedure
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Done in the cath lab during angiography or angioplasty under local anaesthesia
- A guidewire is placed in the coronary artery and the OCT catheter is advanced
- Automatic pull-back with a contrast flush records images in 2-3 seconds
- Images are analysed immediately to plan or optimise the stent
- Procedure continues as planned; no extra recovery time is needed
Risks and Possible Complications
- Very low additional risk beyond angiography or angioplasty
- Small extra amount of contrast dye (caution in kidney disease)
- Rare: spasm or dissection of the artery from the catheter
- Transient rhythm changes during the flush
Your specialist will explain the risks specific to your condition. Choosing an experienced, high-volume hospital keeps complication rates very low.
Recovery and Aftercare
- Recovery is the same as the main procedure (angiography: same day; angioplasty: 1-2 days)
- No additional restrictions due to OCT itself

Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of intracoronary OCT in India starts from USD 1000. OCT imaging add-on (with angiography or angioplasty): USD 1000; Coronary Angiography + OCT: USD 1500; OCT-guided PTCA with 1 DES: USD 6200. The final cost depends on the hospital, room category and medical condition.
Both are intravascular imaging tests. OCT uses light and gives about 10 times sharper images, which is ideal for checking stent expansion and plaque detail. IVUS uses ultrasound, needs no contrast flush and sees deeper into the artery wall. Your cardiologist chooses the right one for your case.
OCT adds about USD 1,000 to the angioplasty package, but it helps choose the correct stent and reduces the chance of repeat procedures in complex cases.
Satyug Healthcare arranges intracoronary OCT at JCI and NABH accredited hospitals such as Max Super Speciality Hospital Saket, BLK-Max Hospital, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Medanta - The Medicity, Artemis Hospitals, Apollo Hospitals and Manipal Hospitals.
