- Dr. (Prof) D. S. Gambhir joined the Department of Cardiology at G.B. Pant Hospital, New Delhi, as Assistant Professor in 1985 and rose to the rank of Professor. Over the decades he has become one of India's most recognised interventional cardiologists, and he now serves as Group Director, Cardiology at Kailash Hospital.
- His expertise lies in complex and multivessel angioplasty, stenting and advanced interventional cardiology. He has performed more than 15,000 coronary interventions, and in 2002, together with collaborators, he developed a drug-coated stent, reported to be the first such development by an Indian cardiologist. He has trained many doctors through live case demonstrations in India and abroad.
- Dr. Gambhir has held major leadership roles in Indian cardiology. He was Honorary Editor of the Indian Heart Journal (1995-2000), served on the editorial boards of journals including the British Heart Journal and CCI (USA), and has been an Executive Committee member and office bearer of the Cardiological Society of India for over three decades, serving as its President in 2002-03. He is also a founding member of the Indian College of Cardiology and was its President in 2007-08.
- His academic contribution includes about 115 original papers, chapters in textbooks and the editing of 'Cardiology Update' (2002) for the Cardiological Society of India. He has delivered more than 300 guest lectures, has been invited to deliver 40 orations, and has served as Principal Investigator on several multicentric national and international drug and device trials. He also writes a monthly column in the community magazine SAMVAD.
- His work has been recognised with the Padma Shri (2016), a Delhi Government state award, the Life Time Achievement Award of the Delhi Medical Association, the Distinguished Physician Award of the Association of American Cardiologists of Indian Origin, the Legend in Cardiology award (Times Group, 2017), the Pioneer in Interventional Cardiology award, and the Inspiring Role and Vashist Chikitsa awards in 2018. He holds fellowships of FAMS, FICC, FCSI, the College of Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, FACC and FSCAI.
