He is widely regarded as a pioneer of cardiac rehabilitation and sports cardiology in India, and he set up the country's first telemetry-monitored cardiac rehabilitation centre in Mumbai in 2001.
- His clinical work centres on structured, medically supervised exercise and lifestyle programmes for people recovering from heart attacks, angioplasty, bypass surgery and chronic lung disease, as well as on preventive cardiology for people at high cardiovascular risk. Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation help patients regain stamina safely, control risk factors and reduce the chance of further cardiac events.
- Dr. Contractor and his team look after the sports medicine needs of more than a hundred athletes who represent India at international competitions. He was the Medical Director of the Tata Mumbai Marathon from 2004 to 2014 and has served as medical director for several other international sporting events in India.
- He has served as Vice Chairman of the International Council of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, a body spanning 45 countries, and as Certification Director for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in India since November 2003. He trained in the United States under leading experts in his field.
- Dr. Contractor is the author of the book 'The Heart Truth' on heart disease prevention and rehabilitation, and has contributed to several international scientific publications, textbooks and journals. An avid sportsman himself, he has run several marathons, completed a non-stop 329 km Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai cycle ride and helped raise 1.1 crore rupees for children with cancer in 2012.
