📖 What is a Hip Replacement?
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The ball is the top of the thigh bone (femur) and the socket (acetabulum) is part of the pelvis. Both are covered with smooth cartilage so the joint moves without pain. When this cartilage wears away because of arthritis, loss of blood supply (avascular necrosis) or an old injury, bone rubs on bone. This causes pain, stiffness and a limp that slowly get worse.
In a total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty, THR), the surgeon removes the damaged ball and the worn socket surface and replaces them with artificial parts made of metal, ceramic and strong medical plastic (polyethylene). Unilateral means only one hip is replaced in this package. The new joint removes the pain and lets most patients walk normally again.

💡 Not every hip pain needs surgery. Mild arthritis is first treated with weight loss, physiotherapy, pain medicines, a walking stick and sometimes joint injections. Early avascular necrosis in young patients may be treated with core decompression to save the natural hip. Replacement is advised when pain and stiffness still affect daily life despite these measures.
