Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Bow Leg (Genu Varum) Correction Surgery in India
Corrective osteotomy and guided-growth surgery to straighten bow legs caused by Blount disease, rickets, injury or arthritis, performed by limb-deformity and paediatric orthopaedic surgeons at accredited Indian hospitals.
📖 What is Bow Leg Correction Surgery?
Bow legs (genu varum) means the knees stay wide apart when the ankles touch. It is normal in babies and usually straightens by age 2–3. When bowing continues after age 3, gets worse, affects one leg more, or appears in older children and adults, it may be caused by Blount disease (a growth problem at the top of the shin bone), rickets (vitamin D or phosphate shortage), old fractures, bone dysplasias or knee arthritis.
Bow leg correction surgery straightens the leg so that body weight passes evenly through the hip, knee and ankle. In growing children, small plates (guided growth / 8-plates) can slowly straighten the bone as it grows. In teenagers and adults, a corrective osteotomy is done: the shin bone (tibia) and sometimes the thigh bone (femur) is cut, straightened and held with plates, nails or an external frame (Ilizarov or hexapod). This protects the knee joint from early arthritis and improves walking and appearance.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Full-length standing leg X-ray | Measures the angles and the exact site of deformity – the key planning test. |
| X-ray of knees and ankles | Checks growth plates and joint shape. |
| Vitamin D, calcium, phosphate, ALP | Rules out active rickets that must be treated first. |
| CT or MRI (if needed) | Checks growth-plate damage or rotational deformity. |
| Blood tests and ECG | Fitness for anaesthesia. |
| Computer deformity planning | Software plans the cut site and correction angle. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Types & Techniques
| Technique | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Guided growth (8-plates) | Small plates slow growth on one side so the leg straightens over 12–18 months | Growing children with mild to moderate bowing |
| Acute corrective osteotomy with plate | Bone cut, straightened and plated in one step | Teens and adults with moderate deformity |
| Gradual correction with Ilizarov / hexapod frame | External frame adjusted daily to straighten slowly | Severe bowing, Blount disease, length difference |
| High tibial osteotomy | Upper-tibia correction in adults | Adult bow legs with early inner-knee arthritis |
| Double-level osteotomy | Both femur and tibia corrected | Deformity at more than one level |
📅 Your Day-by-Day Plan in India

🌱 Recovery After Treatment
🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Good alignment after osteotomy | About 85–95% |
| Guided growth success in children | About 80–90% |
| Bone healing | Over 95% |
| Recurrence (young Blount disease) | About 10–30% |
Results depend on the cause, age, severity of bowing and whether rickets or other medical problems are controlled. Children need follow-up until growth ends because bowing can recur.
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
Like any medical procedure, this treatment carries some risks. Your specialist will explain them in detail before treatment:
- •Pain and swelling in the first weeks (common)

- •Under- or over-correction
- •Delayed bone healing (about 2–5%)
- •Recurrence of bowing in young children
- •Nerve stretch injury (peroneal nerve), uncommon
- •Blood clots and compartment syndrome (rare)
