📖 What is Total Elbow Replacement?
The elbow is a hinge joint where three bones meet: the upper arm bone (humerus) and the two forearm bones (ulna and radius). Smooth cartilage covers the ends of the bones so they glide easily. When this cartilage is destroyed by arthritis or a bad fracture, the elbow becomes painful, stiff and weak, making simple tasks like eating, washing or dressing difficult.
In total elbow replacement (total elbow arthroplasty, TEA), the surgeon removes the damaged ends of the humerus and ulna and replaces them with an artificial joint. The implant has two metal stems that fit inside the hollow centre of the bones, joined by a metal-and-plastic hinge. The stems are usually fixed with bone cement. The new joint removes pain and restores a useful range of movement for daily life.
