📖 What is Bilateral Knee Replacement?
The knee is the joint where the thigh bone (femur) meets the shin bone (tibia). The ends of these bones are covered with smooth cartilage, which lets the knee bend without pain. In osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis this cartilage wears away. Bone then rubs on bone, causing pain, swelling, stiffness and often a bow-legged or knock-kneed shape. Very often both knees are affected at the same time.
In total knee replacement (TKR), also called total knee arthroplasty, the surgeon removes the damaged surfaces and covers them with smooth metal and medical-grade plastic parts (the implant or prosthesis). In bilateral knee replacement both knees are replaced – either in the same operation (simultaneous) or a few days apart in the same hospital stay (staged). This means one trip, one anaesthesia course and one rehabilitation period.

💡 Knee replacement is not the first step. Early or moderate arthritis is first treated with weight loss, physiotherapy, painkillers, knee braces and injections. Admission and checks
You are admitted a day before or on the morning of surgery. Tests are reviewed and the knees are marked.

Anaesthesia
Usually spinal anaesthesia with a nerve block, so you feel no pain; general anaesthesia is used if needed.

Incision
A cut of about 15–20 cm is made over the front of the first knee.
