Ankle Replacement Surgery in India
Ankle replacement (total ankle arthroplasty) replaces the worn-out surfaces of the ankle joint with an artificial joint made of metal and medical-grade plastic. It relieves the pain of severe ankle arthritis while keeping movement in the joint, unlike ankle fusion which locks the joint permanently. The surgery is highly specialised and is performed in India by foot and ankle surgeons in leading accredited hospitals. Satyug Healthcare arranges your evaluation, surgery, accommodation and rehabilitation at a cost far lower than in Europe, the USA or the Gulf.
Cost of ankle replacement surgery in India starts from USD 7000 at leading JCI / NABH accredited hospitals. 4-6 days in hospital; total stay in India 3-4 weeks.
| Package | Cost (USD) | Room | Hospital stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Ankle Replacement - Standard Implant | 7000 USD | Twin Sharing | 4-5 days hospital |
| Total Ankle Replacement - Premium Implant | 8500 USD | Private Room | 4-5 days hospital |
| Ankle Replacement with Deformity Correction | 10000 USD | Private Room | 5-6 days hospital |
Final cost depends on the hospital, room category, doctor, implants/medicines used and the patient's medical condition. Share your reports with Satyug Healthcare for a free written estimate.
About the Procedure
- The ankle joint is formed by the lower end of the shin bone (tibia) and the talus bone of the foot; arthritis damages the cartilage between them and causes pain, swelling and stiffness.
- In ankle replacement, the damaged surfaces are removed and replaced with a metal tibial component, a metal talar component and a polyethylene insert that acts as the bearing surface.
- Implants may be fixed-bearing (the plastic locks into the tibial part) or mobile-bearing (the plastic glides between the two metal parts); your surgeon selects the design best suited to your ankle.
- Compared with ankle fusion (arthrodesis), replacement preserves up-and-down motion, which can give a more natural walking pattern and less stress on neighbouring foot joints.
- Ideal candidates are adults with end-stage arthritis, reasonable bone quality, good circulation and a relatively well-aligned ankle; heavy manual labourers and patients with severe deformity, active infection, poor skin or uncontrolled diabetes may be better suited to fusion.
- Common causes of ankle arthritis include old fractures or ligament injuries (post-traumatic arthritis), rheumatoid arthritis and primary osteoarthritis.
Purpose of the Procedure
- To relieve chronic ankle pain that limits walking and has not improved with medicines, braces or injections.
- To preserve ankle movement and a more natural gait compared with fusion.
- To reduce the extra wear on the joints of the foot and knee that can follow ankle fusion.
- To improve the ability to walk longer distances, climb stairs and stand at work.
- To correct mild-to-moderate deformity of the ankle at the same time as replacing the joint.
- To improve overall quality of life and independence.
Diagnosis and Tests Before the Procedure
- Consultation with a foot and ankle surgeon, including gait assessment and examination of alignment, stability and skin condition.
- Weight-bearing X-rays of the ankle and foot, and long-leg alignment films where needed.
- CT scan to assess bone quality, cysts and joint shape for implant planning.
- MRI in selected cases to evaluate ligaments, tendons and the health of the talus bone.
- Doppler study to confirm good blood supply to the foot.
- Blood tests including blood sugar (HbA1c), inflammatory markers and kidney function.
- ECG, chest X-ray and full pre-anaesthesia evaluation.
Step-by-Step Procedure
- You are admitted on the day of surgery or the day before after final review of your investigations.
- Surgery is done under spinal anaesthesia with a nerve block, or general anaesthesia if preferred.
- An incision is made at the front of the ankle, protecting the tendons, nerves and blood vessels.
- Using precise cutting guides and X-ray control, thin layers of damaged bone and cartilage are removed from the tibia and talus.
- Trial components are inserted to check alignment, ligament balance and range of movement.
- The final metal components are fixed to the bone and the polyethylene insert is placed between them.
- Additional procedures such as tendon lengthening or ligament tightening are done if needed to balance the ankle.
- The wound is closed and the leg is placed in a well-padded splint and elevated; surgery takes about 2-3 hours.
- After a check X-ray, wound review and crutch training, you are discharged usually on day 4-5.
Risks and Possible Complications
- Wound-healing problems, as the skin at the front of the ankle is thin - careful elevation and avoiding smoking are important.
- Infection around the implant.
- Loosening, subsidence or wear of the implant over time, which may require revision or conversion to fusion.
- Fracture of the ankle bones (malleolus) during or after surgery.
- Nerve injury causing numbness on the top of the foot.
- Persistent stiffness, swelling or pain.
- Blood clots in the legs, reduced by blood thinners and early movement of the toes and knee.
Your specialist will explain the risks specific to your condition. Choosing an experienced, high-volume hospital keeps complication rates low.
Recovery and Aftercare
- The leg is kept elevated as much as possible for the first 2 weeks to control swelling and protect the wound.
- You walk with crutches or a walker without putting weight on the operated ankle for an initial period, typically 2-6 weeks depending on the surgeon's protocol.
- Stitches are removed around 14 days, after which a walking boot is usually fitted and weight-bearing is gradually increased.
- Most international patients are fit to fly 2-3 weeks after surgery once the wound has healed; an aisle seat and blood-thinning medication are usually advised.
- Physiotherapy for ankle movement, balance and strength continues for 3-6 months.
- Swelling can take 6-12 months to settle completely; most patients walk comfortably in normal shoes by 3 months.
- Yearly X-ray follow-up is recommended and can be reviewed remotely with your surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of ankle replacement surgery in India starts from USD 7000. Total Ankle Replacement - Standard Implant: USD 7000; Total Ankle Replacement - Premium Implant: USD 8500; Ankle Replacement with Deformity Correction: USD 10000. The final cost depends on the hospital, room category and medical condition.
Ankle fusion is very reliable for pain relief but permanently stops up-and-down ankle movement. Ankle replacement keeps movement and may protect the nearby joints, but is more sensitive to bone quality, alignment and activity level. Your surgeon will compare both options for your specific ankle.
With modern implants, many ankle replacements continue to function well for 10 years or more. Longevity depends on body weight, activity level, alignment and bone quality. If the implant wears out, it can be revised or converted to a fusion.
After an initial period of protected weight-bearing, most patients walk in a boot by 6 weeks and in normal shoes by about 3 months. Full benefit, including reduced swelling, may take up to a year.
Patients with well-controlled diabetes, good circulation and healthy skin may be suitable. Poorly controlled diabetes, neuropathy or poor blood supply increase the risk of wound and infection problems, and in such cases fusion is often safer.
