He has completed his MBBS from Thanjavur Medical College, Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Tamil Nadu in 2001, MS (General Surgery) from V.S.S. Medical College, Burla, Sambalpur University, Odisha in 2006 and MCh (Neurosurgery) from Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad in 2009.

Dr. Alugolu spent more than a decade on the neurosurgery faculty at NIMS, Hyderabad, rising from Assistant Professor (2010-2014) to Senior Grade Assistant Professor (2014-2016) and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery (2016-2021). He then joined Citi Neuro Centre, Hyderabad as Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and went on to become Director of its Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Research Centre (PDMDRC) before taking up his present role at Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City.

He is one of India's most experienced functional neurosurgeons, having performed more than 850 deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures and over 5,000 neurosurgical procedures in all. DBS involves implanting fine electrodes into specific brain targets to control symptoms of Parkinson's disease, dystonia, tremor and certain types of epilepsy, and he also offers spinal and cranial neuromodulation and stereotactic surgery.

Beyond movement disorders, his expertise covers epilepsy surgery, skull base tumours, complex craniovertebral junction (CVJ) anomalies and vascular neurosurgery. He was course coordinator for the post-doctoral fellowship in surgery for movement disorders at NIMS, serves as an examiner for MCh and DNB examinations and thesis assessments, and has conducted workshops and training sessions across neurosurgical subspecialties.

Dr. Alugolu has more than 80 peer-reviewed publications and 5 book chapters, largely on DBS, Parkinson's disease and skull base surgery. He is a life member and executive member of the Indian Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, and a member of the Neurological Society of India, the Neuro-Spinal Surgeons Association of India, the Andhra Pradesh Neuroscientists Association, the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the Indian Academy of Cerebral Palsy.
