What is Cyberknife?

The CyberKnife is one of the most advanced forms of radio surgery. It’s a painless, non-invasive treatment that delivers high doses of precisely targeted radiation to destroy tumors or lesions within the body. It uses a robotic arm to deliver highly focused beams of radiation. The flexibility of the robotic arm makes treatment possible to areas of the body, such as the spine and spinal cord, that can't be treated by other radio surgery techniques.

It is usually done in below mentioned conditions:

  • Non-cancerous tumors
  • Brain cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Breast cancer

Benefits of Cyberknife

Radiosurgery minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. Compared to other radio surgical treatments, the CyberKnife offers several advantages to patients, including rapid relief from pain and other symptoms.

Preparation/Diagnosis

  • Imaging and treatment planning: Before the treatment begins an MRI, CT or CT/PET scan is taken to determine the size, shape and location of the tumour. Images from these scans are digitally transferred to the CyberKnife’s treatment planning workstation. The plan is designed to match the desired radiation dose for the tumour and limit exposure to the surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Fiducial placement: Depending on the type and location of the tumour, fiducials (small golden markers) are inserted to determine the exact location of the tumour.

Treatment

  • Treatments are performed on an outpatient basis, with each treatment lasting between 30 to 90 minutes. The number of treatments varies depending on the tumor size, location and shape but typically only one to five daily sessions are required. The CyberKnife allows patients to lie comfortably on the procedure table without anesthesia while the robotic arm moves, without touching them, to treat all areas of the tumor. The patient undergoes 1 to 5 sessions, depending upon the severity and location of the tumour. Each session may last approximately for 1 hour.

Follow up will depend on the case, site, disease or history of previous treatments and also further treatments if required.

Recovery

The CyberKnife is extremely convenient. Additionally, unlike conventional radiotherapy treatments which can take up to 9 weeks or surgery which can require up to 10 weeks of recovery time, treatment with CyberKnife is completed in a week or less.

Frequently Asked Questions

In a clinical study of 333 patients using the CyberKnife System to treat tumor metastases to the brain, more than 85 percent of evaluable patients achieved local tumor control at two years’ post treatment. That is, the tumor either decreased in size or stopped growing.
