He has completed his MBBS from JJM Medical College, Davangere, MS (General Surgery) from Government Medical College, Surat as gold medallist and university topper, and MCh (Surgical Oncology) from Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad with university second rank, along with FIAGES and a Professional Diploma in Clinical Research (PDCR).
Dr. Sunkavalli trained at Government Medical Hospital, Surat (2001-2004) and Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, Ahmedabad (2004-2007). He was Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Kamineni Hospitals and Professor at Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences (2007-2012), and Consultant Robotic Oncosurgeon at Apollo Hospitals (2012-2022), before joining Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City as Clinical Director of Surgical Oncology. He has trained internationally in advanced liver surgery at New Tokyo Hospital, Japan, robotic surgery in Paris, France and at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York and Long Beach Memorial Hospital, USA.
His practice focuses on robotic, minimally invasive and organ-preserving cancer surgery for cancers of the breast, uterus, cervix, ovary, colon, rectum, stomach, oesophagus, liver and biliary tract, oral cavity and head and neck, thyroid, kidney, lung and urinary tract. Robotic cancer surgery offers magnified 3D vision and precise instruments, which can mean smaller incisions, less blood loss and quicker recovery while achieving complete tumour removal. He is a proctor and mentor for the da Vinci robotic system.
Dr. Sunkavalli is the founder and CEO of Grace Cancer Foundation, through which he pioneered low-cost mobile cancer screening in India, founded a cancer centre in rural Telangana (2017) and set up India's first mobile COVID ICU. The foundation's screening drives earned Guinness World Records for the largest breast cancer screening (2016) and largest oral cancer screening (2019) and a Limca Book of Records entry for cervical cancer screening (2016).
He has received the Best Doctor award from The King Foundation (2022), the Vaidya Rathna Award (2012), Young Oncologist of the Year from the Times of India (2018) and Best Poster at IASO (2006), and spoke at TEDx in 2022. He has been Principal Investigator for multiple clinical trials, authored 'Project Ashray: Planning a Time Constrained Project' listed by Harvard Business Publishing Education, and is a member of the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology and the Indian Medical Association.
