He has completed his MBBS from Gandhi Medical College, Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in 1998, MS (General Surgery) from Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences in 2004, MCh (Surgical Oncology) from Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute, B.J. Dr. Hemanth began his career in 2007 as Assistant Professor of Surgical Oncology at MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre, Hyderabad, while also serving as Consultant Surgical Oncologist at St. Anns Cancer & General Hospital, Kazipet. He went on to work as Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Secunderabad, and at Yashoda Cancer Institute, Secunderabad, before taking up the role of Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic & Minimal Access Onco Surgeon at Apollo Cancer Institute, Jubilee Hills. Since 2020 he has led surgical oncology and minimal access onco surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.
He is known for minimal access cancer surgery, including laparoscopic, thoracoscopic and robotic procedures, for both adults and children. His surgical work covers breast-conserving surgery, complex head and neck resections with reconstruction, robotic and VATS lung and oesophageal resections, robotic and laparoscopic colorectal surgery, thyroid and endocrine surgery, and robotic or laparoscopic operations for urological and gynaecological cancers. Minimally invasive approaches of this kind typically mean smaller incisions, less blood loss, less post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal activity.
In paediatric oncology, Dr. Hemanth operates on childhood tumours such as Wilms' tumour, neuroblastoma, liver tumours, germ cell tumours and bone and soft tissue tumours. His special interests include robotic surgery, oesophageal and upper GI surgery, thoraco-laparoscopic onco surgery and gynaecologic oncology.
An accomplished academic, he was a gold medallist and university first in MCh (Surgical Oncology) at Gujarat University and secured All India first rank in the MCh entrance examination in 2004. He has delivered guest lectures, performed live surgical demonstrations, guided DNB surgical oncology trainees, served as principal investigator on a clinical trial and published in national and international journals, including reports on thyroid malignancies, neuroendocrine carcinoma of the cervix and GIST.
He is a member of the Indian Medical Association, the Association of Surgeons of India, the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology, the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons and the Association of Breast Surgeons of India.
