📖 What is a Prostatectomy?
The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, found only in men. It sits below the bladder and wraps around the tube that carries urine out (urethra). It makes part of the fluid in semen. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men over 50. When found early, it is usually still inside the gland and can often be cured.
A radical prostatectomy is an operation to remove the whole prostate, the seminal vesicles (small glands behind it) and, when needed, nearby lymph nodes. The bladder is then joined back to the urethra. It can be done as open surgery, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery or robotic-assisted surgery. Where possible the surgeon uses a nerve-sparing technique to protect the nerves that control erections.
