📖 What is Colon Cancer Surgery?
The colon (large bowel) is the last part of the digestive tract. It absorbs water and forms stool. Colon cancer usually starts as a small growth called a polyp on the inner lining. Over several years some polyps turn into cancer, which can grow through the bowel wall and spread to lymph nodes, the liver or lungs. It is one of the most common cancers in the world, mostly in people over 50.
Surgery is the main treatment that can cure colon cancer. The operation is called a colectomy (or hemicolectomy). The surgeon removes the part of the colon that has the tumour, with a safe margin of normal bowel and at least 12 lymph nodes, and then joins the two healthy ends (an anastomosis). Types include right hemicolectomy, left hemicolectomy, sigmoid colectomy and total colectomy. A temporary stoma (bag) is needed only in some patients. Chemotherapy may be given after surgery depending on the stage.

💡 Very early cancers inside a polyp may not need major surgery. If the cancer is confined to a polyp and removed completely with clear margins by colonoscopy, regular surveillance may be enough. Patients with widespread spread are usually treated with chemotherapy first, and surgery is decided by the tumour board.
