Surgery done with the aid of a laparoscope to remove all or part of the colon through several small incisions made in the wall of the abdomen. A laparoscope is a thin, tube-like instrument with a light and a lens for viewing. It may also have a tool to remove tissue to be checked under a microscope for signs of disease. The laparoscope is inserted through one opening to guide the surgery. Surgical instruments are inserted through the other openings to perform the surgery. When only part of the colon is removed, it is called a partial colectomy.
A hemicolectomy may involve removing a portion of the colon on the right or left side.
Benefits
However, laparoscopic colectomy requires capnoperitoneum, special instruments and complicated techniques, longer operating time, higher costs, and surgical skill.
If colon cancer develops, a doctor will often recommend surgery to remove the tumor or part of the large intestine. In instances of bowel disease, surgery may be necessary to remove the diseased or damaged section of the large intestine. During a hemicolectomy, a surgeon only removes one side of the colon. Which side of the colon the surgeon removes depends on the location of the tumor or diseased tissue. Removal of a section of the colon will not affect a person’s ability to digest food.
Preparation for a hemicolectomy varies, depending on a person’s overall health and the medications they may be taking. Typically, a doctor will perform tests before the surgery to make sure the individual is an appropriate candidate for a hemicolectomy. These tests include an electrocardiogram (EKG) and blood tests. A person may need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, for a specific time ahead of surgery. However, it is essential only to stop medications on a doctor’s instruction. People will need to fast for 12 hours before their procedure. They may also need a bowel prep, which involves taking a laxative to clean out the colon.
A surgeon can perform a hemicolectomy using either laparoscopic or open surgery.
Laparoscopic procedure: During a laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdominal wall and inserts a thin scope. The scope has a lens and light for viewing purposes. The surgeon then inserts surgical instruments through the small cuts in the abdomen. This type of procedure is also known as keyhole surgery. If a surgeon cannot carry out the operation by this method, they will need to use open surgery.
Open surgery: An open hemicolectomy involves making longer cuts in the body to access the colon. Since the cuts are larger with an open procedure, recovery may take longer.
The colon consists of three parts:
A bland diet will have foods that reduce the risk of inflammation and may include:

It is very unlikely that you will need a stoma. However, sometimes it is not possible to join the bowel back together again, so the end of the bowel is brought out onto the abdomen (tummy) to form an opening outside the body, known as a stoma.
Avoid nuts, seeds, chunky peanut butter (Creamy peanut butter is okay.), tough meats, fried foods (french fries, fast food), beans, peas, hot dogs, sausage, strong flavored cheeses, coconut, raisins, and desserts with nuts or raisins.
Finding foods that are best for you may require some trial and error. Cottage cheese Milk or lactose-free milk Mild cheese Sherbet Soy milk, rice milk, or almond milk Yogurt or soy yogurt Yogurt with added fruit. If you do not feel well after drinking milk or eating dairy foods, try lactose-free products.
Once the stoma area heals, you can start experimenting with your usual sleep position. If you're a side sleeper and prefer lying on the same side as your stoma, this position shouldn't cause any concern because your pouch will be supported by the bed.
Usually, 7-8 days in hospital (slightly less on average if the procedure is done laparoscopically) and 7-8 weeks before you feel back to normal (4-5 weeks after laparoscopic bowel surgery.
