What is Laparoscopic Hemicolectomy?

Laparoscopic Hemicolectomy is an advanced cancer surgery in Modern Medical Era. It is a surgery done to remove the part of the large intestine named colon. 

Usually, this surgery is done to the following health problems or diseases inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, Polyps, or tissue growths in your colon that can become cancerous.

Hemicolectomy is operated on both sides of the abdomen. It can be done on both left and right sides. But the process is the same. It can be done in two techniques open and keyhole methods. Open method is a traditional method where the stomach is cut open and the removal of the colon is done.

In the laparoscopic or keyhole method various small holes are made and through the holes the special needle or operating equipment is inserted. With the help of the camera in them, doctors can see the image in the monitor and they remove the colon. 

How long it takes to heal from the Hemicolectomy?

The recovery time of the laparoscopic Hemicolectomy is shorter than the Open Hemicolectomy. Though it is shorter the patient should stay in the hospital for 5 to 7 days.

Full healing of the larger intestine will take to 1 to 3 months. And this may vary based on the health condition of the patients.

What are the procedures to do before the Hemicolectomy?

The preparation of the Surgery process will start before one week. The doctors will take an x-ray and other lab tests to know your health condition and also to ascertain the complexity of the surgery. Before 8 hours of the surgery, your mouth will be closed i.e., you will not be allowed to eat.

Is the Hemicolectomy is painful?

Hemicolectomy is major surgery and thus the pain is inevitable. You will be given anesthesia before the surgery and you will be in the sleep during the surgery, later when you wake up in the recovery region you may feel drowsy due to the effect of anesthesia, and also for the first 1 or 3 days you will be given painkillers through the IV drop so you will not feel the pain.

Will you lose weight after the surgery?

Sometimes you will lose weight after the surgery due to lack of nutrients and not enough food. But you can return to your normal state after the recovery period you should concentrate on the high-calorie foods after the recovery.

Can I drink alcohol to get rid of the pain?

No, you shouldn’t drink alcohol. The amount of alcohol or other drugs you use determine the complications in the surgery and also in the healing process. The doctor will advise you to stop taking alcohol at least one week before the surgery. If you are a regular drinker than the surgery and healing process will hard for you,

What is the success rate of the Hemicolectomy?

The seriousness of the surgery is categorized into three stages. The success rate for Stage I is 97.03%, Stage II is 93.24% and Stage III is 86.88%. All the percentages are taken based on the 3 years of free survival.

Can I live without the colon?

Well in serious case the whole colon part in the large intestine is removed (both right and left). The people who don't have a colon can live but they should wear a bag to the stool the bowel. But in modern technology, an artificial bag-like structure is attached to the small intestine thus wearing a bag becomes unnecessary. 

What are the foods I can eat after the Hemicolectomy?

You can't eat after the surgery, you will be given nutrients through the drips, after a week you can intake fluid foods, and during the recovery period, you should eat the foods with low calories and easy for digestion. After a full recovery, you can return to your normal diet.

When I can return to work after my Hemicolectomy surgery?

You should take 2 to 3 weeks off. It may differ based on the work activities you involve and the health condition. You should get your physician's advice regarding your body condition.
