What is a Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is a life-saving surgical procedure in which a diseased or failing liver is replaced with a healthy liver from a living or deceased donor. India has become a global leader in liver transplantation, offering world-class outcomes at 60–70% less than the cost in the USA or UK — with no years-long waitlist.

India's top transplant centres perform over 2,000 liver transplants annually, with survival rates matching the best programmes in the world.

Types of Liver Transplant

Type Description Best For
Living Donor (LDLT) A healthy close relative donates a portion of their liver. Both livers regenerate fully within weeks. Most common in India. Ideal when a matching relative is available.
Cadaveric (Deceased) Whole liver from a brain-dead donor transplanted into the recipient. Acute liver failure when no living donor is available.
Split Liver Deceased donor liver split and transplanted into two recipients. One adult + one paediatric recipient.
Paediatric Specialised transplant for infants and children with biliary atresia, metabolic liver disease or acute failure. Children and infants only.
Auxiliary Only a portion of the diseased liver is removed; a partial donor liver placed alongside to support regeneration. When native liver may recover over time.

When Do You Need a Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is recommended when the liver is damaged beyond repair due to chronic or acute liver failure. Common conditions include:

● Chronic hepatitis B or C with cirrhosis
● Alcoholic liver disease (cirrhosis)
● Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD/NASH)
● Biliary atresia (in children)
● Primary biliary cholangitis
● Sclerosing cholangitis
● Wilson's disease & Hemochromatosis
● Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer)
● Acute liver failure (drug overdose, viral hepatitis)
● Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency
● Metabolic liver diseases
● Fatty liver with severe fibrosis
