📖 What is Aortic Valve Replacement?
The heart has four valves that work like one-way doors. The aortic valve sits between the left pumping chamber (left ventricle) and the aorta, the main artery that carries blood to the whole body. If this valve becomes narrow and stiff (aortic stenosis), the heart must push very hard to pump blood. If it does not close properly (aortic regurgitation), blood leaks back into the heart. Both problems slowly weaken the heart and can cause breathlessness, chest pain, fainting and heart failure.
Aortic valve replacement (AVR) is open-heart surgery in which the surgeon removes the diseased valve and sews in a new artificial valve. The new valve can be mechanical (made of carbon, lasts a lifetime but needs blood thinners for life) or biological / tissue (made from animal tissue, usually no lifelong blood thinners but may wear out after 10–20 years). It is also called surgical AVR (SAVR). A catheter-based option without opening the chest, called TAVI / TAVR, is available for selected older or high-risk patients at a separate cost.

💡 Not every valve problem needs surgery right away.
