What is total gastrectomy surgery cost in India?
Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve procedure, the outer margin of the stomach is removed to restrict food intake, leaving a sleeve of stomach, roughly the size and shape of a banana, and the pylorus, the muscle that controls emptying of food from the stomach into the intestine. A sleeve gastrectomy is a purely restrictive procedure. By reducing the size of the stomach, it allows the patient to feel full after eating less and taking in fewer calories. The surgery removes that portion of the stomach that produces a hormone that can makes a patient feel hungry. The sleeve gastrectomy, unlike the Lap-band, does not require the use of a banding device to be implanted around a portion of the stomach.
Advantages
Weight loss generally faster with the sleeve than with the gastric band.
Less food intolerance than with the gastric band.
No implantable band device
Surgical risk is lower than with gastric bypass while weight loss is similar.
Sleeve gastrectomy is relatively new and has not been evaluated as much gastric banding or gastric bypass.
Sleeve gastrectomy is irreversible.
Complication risks are slightly higher than with Lap-band.
Disadvantages
Sleeve gastrectomy is relatively new and has not been evaluated as much gastric banding or gastric bypass.
Sleeve gastrectomy is irreversible.
Complication risks are slightly higher than with Lap-band.
How Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Performed?
We perform the sleeve gastrectomy as a laparoscopic procedure. This involves making five or six small incisions in the abdomen and performing the procedure using a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions. During the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), about 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric “tube” or “sleeve”. No intestines are removed or bypassed during the sleeve gastrectomy. The LSG takes one to two hours to complete.
Risks Involved
There are risks that are common to any laparoscopic procedure such as bleeding, infection, injury to other organs, or the need to convert to an open procedure. There is also a small risk of a leak from the staple line used to divide the stomach. These problems are rare and major complications occur less than 1% of the time. Overall, the operative risks associated with LSG are slightly higher than those seen with the laparoscopic adjustable band but lower than the risks associated with gastric bypass.
Gastric sleeve surgery is usually indicated for morbidly obese adults — that is, people between 18 and 65 with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. For a person standing 5-foot-9, that equates to a body weight of 270. People with a body-mass index of 35 — 235 pounds for a 5-foot-9-inch adult can qualify.
The surgery limits the amount of food your stomach can hold as it makes your stomach smaller, you will get full more quickly when you eat. You will have some belly pain and may need pain medicine for the first week or so after surgery. The cuts (incisions) that the doctor made may be tender and sore.
After surgery, you may be going only every other day. As a general rule, if you have not had bowelmovement in 2 to 3 days or if going becomes painful or uncomfortable, contact your doctor. As with any medical condition, you should always consult with your doctor before beginning a specific treatment.
The stomach is built to stretch when food enters. When the stomach reaches capacity, it alerts your body that it's full so you will stop eating. When a person overeats, the stomach stretches even more to accommodate the extra food. If this is a rare occurrence, the stomach will simply shrink back to the previous size.
During the first month, patients can expect an average weight loss of up to 30 pounds. After threemonths, the percentage of overall excess loss can reach up to 30 percent. That number increases to 50 percent after six months – which means the expected weight loss translates to about two pounds per week.
