📖 What is a Total Gastrectomy?

The stomach is a J-shaped bag in the upper abdomen. It stores food, mixes it with acid and enzymes, and slowly passes it into the small intestine. Cancer, large tumours or certain inherited gene changes can make it necessary to remove the whole stomach.

A total gastrectomy removes the entire stomach along with nearby lymph nodes (usually a D2 dissection in cancer). The food pipe (oesophagus) is then joined directly to the small intestine, most often by a Roux-en-Y connection. People can live a normal life without a stomach by eating small, frequent meals and taking vitamin B12. Total gastrectomy is different from sleeve gastrectomy, which removes only part of the stomach for weight loss.
