📖 What is Esophageal Stricture Dilation?
The esophagus (food pipe) is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. A stricture is a narrowing of this tube, usually caused by scar tissue. Long-term acid reflux, swallowing acid or alkali (caustic injury), radiation, earlier surgery or some conditions like eosinophilic esophagitis can cause it. Food then sticks in the chest, and swallowing becomes hard or painful.
Stricture dilation (also called esophageal dilatation) gently stretches the narrow part to make it wider. It is done during an endoscopy (a thin flexible camera passed through the mouth) under sedation. The doctor uses either a balloon that is inflated inside the narrow part, or tapered tubes called bougies (Savary-Gilliard dilators) passed over a guide wire. There is no cut. Several sessions a few days or weeks apart may be needed for tight or long strictures.
