📖 What is Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Surgery?
An inguinal hernia is a bulge in the groin. It happens when fat or a loop of bowel pushes through a weak spot in the lower belly wall, near the groin canal (inguinal canal). It is very common, especially in men – about 1 in 4 men will have one in their lifetime. The bulge often gets bigger when you cough, lift or stand, and goes back when you lie down. A hernia does not heal by itself and usually grows slowly over time.
Laparoscopic hernia repair, also called keyhole hernia surgery, fixes the weak spot from the inside using a camera and thin instruments passed through 3 small cuts (5–10 mm). The surgeon pushes the hernia back and covers the weak area with a soft synthetic mesh. The two main methods are TEP (totally extraperitoneal) and TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal). Both sides can be repaired through the same small cuts.
