What is Laparoscopic Anterior Resection?

It is a surgery done for the rectum cancer. In the surgery the rectum and the colonare removed. There are two types of anterior resection; they are lower anterior resection and higher anterior resection. The process for both are same but the part removed are differs in the both surgery. In the lower anterior surgery is the effective surgery for the rectal cancer. The rectum is removed and then the colon is attached with the remaining rectum and form normal bowel process. In the Higher anterior resection is a colectomy, that the removal part is the sigmoid colon. It is the last part of the colon that connects with rectum. This is also known as sigmocolectomy. The anterior resection can be done in two methods. They are Open and Keyhole o laparoscopic method. In the keyhole method the body is cut-opened, whereas in the keyhole the laparoscope needles are inserted in to the body. By the cameras in the laparoscope the surgery is done. This method saves much blood loss.

How long the process takes?

The process of the surgery will be between 1 to 4 hours. This doesn’t include the preparation time and the recovery time. The time of the surgery may differ based on the complexity and health condition of the patient.

What happens before the anterior resection surgery?

You will be asked to stop eating 8 hours before the surgery, and you will stop drinking 2 hours before the surgery. You will be admitted in the hospital one day before the operation most of the peoples take the operation in morning.

How long is the recovery period?

You will be in the hospital for 4 to 7 days, after that you can go to the home, but it will take 2 to 3 months to colon to heal completely. You should have regular check up during the recovery periods. The time of the hospital stay and the recovery period may differ based on the heath condition of the patient.

Can I poop after the anterior resection?

You will not be able to have the bowel movement for the first four or five days. You should have a laxative bag. Once your rectum and colon get healed you can have the bowel. If you have any problem you should inform the doctor any problem in that.

Why do I fart after the anterior resection?

 Well, your doctor will ask you again and again about the gas. The reason if the gas released that means that the rectum is coming back to normal. So it is common to fart after the anterior resection if you didn’t that is the problem.

How can I stimulate my fart?

You can walk outside your room 3 or 4 times a day; sit straight in the chair of 30 to 60 minutes. Lay left side in the bed so you can help the gas that struck in your intestine to move. Eat low meals, drink hot water. By this you can stimulate the gas in your intestine.

Is the anterior resection is painful?

It is a major surgery, you will be given anesthesia before the surgery, so you will not be awaken during the surgery, after you woke up in the recovery ward, you will feel the drowsiness due to the anesthesia but you will not feel the pain as pain killers are inserted through the IV drips. Any way the pain will increase once you stop taking the pain killers.

Will I lose weight after the anterior resection?

There are chances to lose weight, after the anterior resection. But you can regain to your normal condition after you completely recover from the surgery. Sometimes you may also have adverse effects. Your weight may increase after the surgery.

What should I do in the recovery period?

During the recovery you should eat the foods with low calories and easy to digest. You shouldn’t drink alcohol or and soda drinks. You should follow the rehabilitation exercise insisted by your physician. You should have regular check up of your nutrient level.

What are the complications in the anterior resection?

There are some complications that may arise after the colon surgery. They are A leak between the joined sections of your colon, Bleeding in your intestines, Incision breaking open (dehiscence)Infection, Injury to your bladder, ureters or blood vessels, Intestines pushing through the incision into your belly (incision hernia)Scar tissue that forms an intestinal blockage (stricture).
