Earlier he served as Assistant Professor and Lecturer in General Surgery at KEM Hospital, Mumbai from 1996 to 1999, and in 1997 he trained in France as assistant to Prof. Jacques Perissat at Maison du Haut Leveque, one of the pioneers of laparoscopic surgery.
- His practice covers advanced laparoscopic surgery across upper GI, colorectal, bariatric, hepato-biliary and thoracic procedures, with particular expertise in single-port (scarless) techniques. He routinely performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic colectomy and gastric surgery, robotic general surgery and bariatric procedures for obesity, which offer patients smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery than open surgery.
- A keen academic, Dr. Rao has made over 200 presentations at national and international conferences, published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers and contributed over three book chapters on laparoscopic surgery. He is a teacher and examiner for MBBS, MS, FMAS and the Nursing Council of India, and reviews for journals including JMAS and the British Journal of Surgery.
- He is a founder member of the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India and the Indian Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and has served on the executive committees of AMASI and the Indian Association of Gastroendosurgeons. His honours include the Dr. A.V. Baliga Memorial Prize for standing first in MS, Best Video awards at MASICON and the ELSA/IAGES Asia Pacific Conference, and the Best Laparoscopic Surgeon (Maharashtra) award at the International Health Summit 2017.
