He began as Senior Resident in Cardiology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (1975-1978), and went on to serve as Assistant Professor of Cardiology at Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad (1978-1984), Professor of Cardiology at Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada (1984-1988), and Professor and Head of the Department of Cardiology at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad (1988-2004).
- He established India's first 2-D echocardiography laboratory at AIIMS, New Delhi (1978), Andhra Pradesh's first echo laboratory at Gandhi Hospital (1980), India's first TEE laboratory at Osmania General Hospital (1990) and India's first multiplane TEE laboratory at Kamineni Hospital (1994). He also started India's first DM (Cardiology) training programme at Gandhi Medical College in 1980 and founded cardiology departments at Siddhartha Medical College, AP Chest Hospital, Kamineni Hospital and CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad.
- Echocardiography uses ultrasound to show the structure and function of the heart, its valves and chambers, while transoesophageal echocardiography gives detailed images from inside the food pipe. These tests are central to diagnosing valve disease, congenital heart defects, heart failure and clots, and his work helped make them widely available in India.
- Dr. Krishnam Raju has authored 26 book chapters and 160 research papers and has made 249 presentations at national and international conferences. He has received six lifetime achievement awards, and served as President of the AP Cardiological Society of India (1998-1999), General Secretary (2000-2002) and Vice President (2002-2004) of the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, Academic Senate Member of Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, and Founder Member of the Cardiac Imaging Club, Hyderabad.
