what is a cholecystectomy surgery?

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The operation is done to remove the gallbladder due to gallstones causing pain or infection. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy—The gallbladder is removed with instruments placed into small incisions in the abdomen.

Functions of gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small hollow organ where bile is stored , which is created in the liver. Bile released into the small intestine that helps to breaks down fats into fatty acids, which is important for the digestion of food. Bile can also pass directly to the bowel from the Liver.

Bile is a fluid that is made and released by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile helps with digestion. It breaks down fats into fatty acids, which can be taken into the body by the digestive tract. Bile acids (also called bile salts)

Who needs cholecystectomy surgery ?

• Acute cholecystitis: Inflammation of the gallbladder that commonly occurs due to gallstones
• Choledocholithiasis: A condition, wherein the gallstone travels out of the gallbladder and blocks the common bile duct, preventing the flow of bile into the small bowel. In a majority of the cases, the stone in the duct is addressed first, prior to gallbladder removal

Before Surgery

1. Patient require a night fasting before surgery.The intestine must be clear before the surgery.
2. Follow your surgeon instructions for any prescribed medications about your ongoing medicines and stop or continue certain medicines and supplements
3. Some preoperative investigations like blood tests, X-ray or ECG and ultrasound of the gallbladder are required before surgery.
Post Procedure

1. Post Surgery, Patient allowed to take soft diet and liquid for some days.
2. Patient advice to stay under Doctor Observation & Follow-up for few weeks
