📖 What is Vertebroplasty?
The spine is made of bones called vertebrae. When bones become weak – most often from osteoporosis (thin bones) in older people, or from cancer such as myeloma or spread to the spine – a vertebra can collapse or crack. This is called a vertebral compression fracture. It causes sudden, severe back pain, loss of height and a stooped back, and can make walking and sleeping very hard.
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure. Under X-ray guidance, the doctor passes a hollow needle through the skin into the broken vertebra and injects a medical bone cement (PMMA). The cement hardens in about 10–20 minutes, stabilising the fracture and reducing pain, often within 1–2 days. A similar procedure, kyphoplasty, first inflates a small balloon to restore some height before adding cement. No large cut or stitches are needed.
