Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Neuro-Navigation Guided Brain Tumour Surgery in India
Precise removal of brain tumours such as meningioma, glioma and metastasis using a 'GPS for the brain', done by senior neurosurgeons at accredited Indian hospitals – at a fraction of US, UK or Gulf prices.
📖 What is Neuro-Navigation Guided Brain Tumour Surgery?
A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells inside the skull. Some are benign (not cancer), such as most meningiomas, and grow slowly. Others are malignant, such as high-grade gliomas, or are spread from cancer elsewhere (metastases). As a tumour grows it presses on the brain, causing headaches, fits, weakness, speech or vision problems and changes in behaviour.
Neuro-navigation works like a GPS for the brain. Your MRI or CT is loaded into a computer that tracks the surgeon's instruments in real time and shows their exact position on the scan, with an accuracy of about 1–2 mm. This lets the surgeon plan the smallest safe opening (craniotomy), find the tumour quickly and remove as much as possible while protecting important brain areas. It is used together with an operating microscope and, when needed, nerve monitoring, awake surgery or fluorescence dyes.

🩺 Conditions Treated
⚠️ Symptoms That May Need Brain Tumour Surgery
- ➤New or worsening headaches, often in the morning
- ➤Fits (seizures)
- ➤Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
- ➤Speech or understanding difficulties
- ➤Blurred or double vision, or loss of side vision
- ➤Personality or memory changes
- ➤Nausea and vomiting with headache
- ➤Balance problems or hearing loss in one ear
🔬 Tests Before Treatment
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Contrast MRI of the brain | Main test – shows tumour size, location and relation to important brain areas; used for navigation. |
| Functional MRI and DTI tractography | Maps speech, movement areas and nerve fibre tracts near the tumour. |
| CT scan of the brain | Shows bone involvement, calcium and bleeding. |
| MR spectroscopy / perfusion (if needed) | Helps judge tumour grade or tell tumour from other lesions. |
| Whole-body CT or PET-CT | When metastasis is suspected, to find the primary cancer. |
| Blood tests, ECG, chest X-ray | Check fitness for anaesthesia. |
| Eye and hearing tests (if needed) | Baseline for tumours near the optic or hearing nerves. |
🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

⚖️ Types & Techniques
| Technique | What is done | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Navigation-guided craniotomy | Tumour removed through a bone window using navigation and microscope | Most meningiomas, gliomas and metastases |
| Awake craniotomy | Patient awake during part of surgery to test speech and movement | Tumours near speech or motor areas |
| Fluorescence-guided surgery (5-ALA) | Dye makes high-grade tumour glow under special light | Glioblastoma and high-grade glioma |
| Endoscopic surgery | Tumour removed through the nose or a small keyhole | Pituitary and skull-base tumours, colloid cysts |
| Navigation-guided biopsy | Needle sample taken through a small hole | Deep tumours or suspected lymphoma |

🌱 Recovery After Treatment
🏆 Success Rate
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Accuracy of neuro-navigation | About 1–2 mm |
| Complete removal of accessible meningioma (Simpson grade I–II) | About 70–90% |
| 10-year survival after removal of benign meningioma | About 80–90% |
| Serious new neurological problem after surgery | About 5–10%, often temporary |
| Surgical mortality at major centres | About 1–2% |
Results depend mainly on the tumour type and grade, its location, how much can be removed safely, and your age and health. Malignant tumours need radiotherapy and chemotherapy after surgery.
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
Brain surgery has real risks, but navigation and monitoring help reduce them.
- •New or worse weakness, speech or vision problems – about 5–10%, often temporary
- •Seizures after surgery – about 5–15%, controlled with medicines
- •Brain swelling or bleeding needing treatment – about 1–3%
- •Wound infection or meningitis – about 1–3%
- •Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak – about 1–3%
- •Blood clots in the legs or lungs – about 1–3%
- •Tumour coming back – depends on type; common with high-grade glioma
