📖 What is a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy?

The uterus (womb) is the organ where a baby grows during pregnancy and where monthly periods come from. Problems such as fibroids (non-cancerous lumps), adenomyosis, endometriosis, very heavy bleeding, a dropped womb (prolapse) or pre-cancer changes can cause pain, anaemia and poor quality of life. When medicines and simpler treatments have not helped, removal of the uterus – a hysterectomy – may be advised.

In a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the surgeon makes 3–4 small cuts (5–10 mm) in the abdomen and uses a camera (laparoscope) and fine instruments to remove the uterus, which is usually taken out through the vagina. The cervix is usually removed too (total laparoscopic hysterectomy, TLH). The tubes are often removed to lower ovarian cancer risk, and the ovaries are kept if healthy in younger women. Compared with open surgery, keyhole surgery means less pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and faster return to normal life.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
A hysterectomy is surgery to remove the womb, and sometimes the cervix, tubes or ovaries. It treats problems like fibroids, heavy bleeding, prolapse or some cancers, usually after other treatments are tried. After it, you will not have periods or be able to get pregnant.

🩺 Conditions Treated

🔴
Uterine fibroids
Non-cancerous lumps causing heavy bleeding, pain or pressure.
🩸
Heavy or abnormal bleeding
Bleeding causing anaemia that does not improve with medicine or other treatments.
🌀
Adenomyosis
Lining tissue growing into the womb muscle, causing painful heavy periods.
🔥
Endometriosis
Painful periods and pelvic pain when other treatments have failed.
⬇️
Uterine prolapse
The womb drops into the vagina due to weak pelvic floor support.
🔬
Pre-cancer of the cervix or womb lining
Atypical endometrial hyperplasia or persistent CIN not suitable for other treatment.

⚠️ Symptoms That May Need Treatment

  • ➤Very heavy or prolonged periods
  • ➤Bleeding between periods or after sex
  • ➤Severe period pain
  • ➤Chronic pelvic pain
  • ➤Tiredness and anaemia from blood loss
  • ➤Pressure, bloating or frequent urination
  • ➤A bulge or heaviness in the vagina
  • ➤Bleeding after menopause (needs urgent check)
💡 Hysterectomy is not the first treatment for most problems. Medicines, the hormonal coil (Mirena), endometrial ablation, myomectomy (removing only fibroids) or uterine artery embolisation may help and keep the womb. After a hysterectomy you cannot become pregnant, so women who wish to have children should discuss other options first.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Pelvic ultrasound (transvaginal)Shows the size of the uterus, fibroids, adenomyosis and ovaries.
Pap smear / HPV testRules out cervical cancer before surgery.
Endometrial biopsy (if needed)Rules out cancer of the womb lining in abnormal bleeding.
MRI pelvis (selected cases)For very large fibroids, deep endometriosis or unclear findings.
Blood tests (CBC, sugar, kidney, liver, thyroid, clotting, blood group)Check anaemia and fitness for surgery.
ECG and chest X-rayRoutine fitness checks before anaesthesia.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy procedure steps
1
Consultation
The gynaecologist examines you, reviews reports and explains whether ovaries and tubes will be kept or removed.
2
Admission and preparation
Pre-operative tests, anaesthesia check and fasting for 6–8 hours.
3
General anaesthesia
You are fully asleep during surgery.
4
Small incisions
3–4 small cuts are made; the abdomen is inflated with gas to create space.
5
Laparoscopic dissection
Blood vessels and supporting ligaments are sealed and divided with energy devices.
6
Bladder and ureter protection
The bladder is gently moved away and the ureters protected.
7
Removal of the uterus
The uterus (and cervix, and tubes if planned) is removed, usually through the vagina.
8
Vaginal vault closure
The top of the vagina is stitched closed laparoscopically.
9
Recovery
You walk within hours, eat on the same day, and the catheter is removed next morning.
10
Discharge
Discharge after 3–4 days with medicines, wound care and activity advice.

⚖️ Types of Hysterectomy

TechniqueWhat is doneBest for
Total laparoscopic hysterectomy (this package)Uterus and cervix removed fully by keyholeMost benign conditions
Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH)Part keyhole, part vaginal surgeryModerately enlarged uterus
Vaginal hysterectomyUterus removed through the vagina, no abdominal cutsProlapse, small uterus
Robotic hysterectomyKeyhole surgery with robotic armsObesity, complex endometriosis, cancer staging
Abdominal (open) hysterectomyUterus removed through a cut in the abdomenVery large fibroids, advanced cancer
📊 A Cochrane review (Aarts et al., 2015) found that laparoscopic hysterectomy, compared with abdominal hysterectomy, leads to faster return to normal activities (by about 2 weeks), shorter hospital stay and fewer wound infections.

The standard package starts from about USD 1,499 with a 3–4 day private room stay. Complex cases or robotic surgery cost more.
➤ How long will I stay in hospital and in India?
About 3–4 days in hospital. Plan for 10–14 days in India in total.
➤ Will my ovaries be removed?
Not always. In younger women healthy ovaries are usually kept to avoid early menopause. Tubes are often removed to lower ovarian cancer risk. Your surgeon will discuss this with you.
➤ Will I go into menopause?
Only if both ovaries are removed. If ovaries are kept, menopause usually comes at the normal age, though periods stop.
➤ Is the surgery painful?
Pain is usually mild to moderate and controlled with tablets. Many women feel shoulder-tip pain from the gas for 1–2 days.
➤ When can I return to work?
Desk work in 2–3 weeks; physical work after about 6 weeks.
➤ Will there be visible scars?
Only 3–4 small scars of 5–10 mm, which fade over months.
➤ Can I still have sex after hysterectomy?
Yes, after about 6–8 weeks once the top of the vagina has healed. Many women report better sex life once pain or bleeding is gone.
➤ What are the main risks?
Infection, bleeding, urinary problems, and rarely injury to the bladder, ureter or bowel. Serious complications are uncommon.
➤ Are there alternatives?
Yes – medicines, hormonal coil, endometrial ablation, myomectomy or uterine artery embolisation, depending on your condition.
➤ Can I fly home soon after surgery?
Most women can fly 7–10 days after surgery. Walk during the flight and wear compression stockings if advised.
➤ Can a family member come with me?
Yes, one or two attendants can come on a medical attendant visa. Satyug provides the visa invitation letter.
➤ What follow-up is needed?
A check-up at 6 weeks, usually by video with your surgeon, and review of the biopsy report. Routine Pap smears may not be needed after total hysterectomy for benign disease.
