📖 What is Hysteroscopy?

The uterus (womb) is where a baby grows during pregnancy, and its inner lining is shed every month as the period. Problems inside the womb – such as small growths (polyps), fibroids that bulge into the cavity, scar tissue (adhesions) or a wall of tissue dividing it (septum) – can cause heavy or irregular bleeding, pain, difficulty getting pregnant or repeated miscarriages. These problems often cannot be seen clearly on ultrasound alone.

Hysteroscopy uses a thin, lighted telescope (hysteroscope) passed through the vagina and the neck of the womb (cervix) to look directly inside the uterus – no cut is made on the tummy. A diagnostic hysteroscopy only looks and takes a sample (biopsy). An operative hysteroscopy also treats the problem in the same sitting, using fine instruments, a resectoscope or a tissue-removal device to cut out polyps, fibroids, septum or adhesions.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
A hysteroscopy uses a thin camera passed through the vagina and cervix to look inside the womb. No cuts are needed. Doctors can find the cause of problems like abnormal bleeding and often remove polyps or small fibroids at the same time.

🩺 Conditions Treated

🩸
Abnormal uterine bleeding
Heavy, irregular or bleeding between periods – the cause is found and often treated.
🔴
Endometrial polyps
Soft growths of the womb lining removed completely and sent for biopsy.
⚪
Submucous fibroids
Fibroids that bulge into the womb cavity, removed by hysteroscopic myomectomy.
🧱
Uterine septum
A wall dividing the womb that can cause miscarriage – cut to restore normal shape.
🕸️
Asherman syndrome (adhesions)
Scar tissue inside the womb, often after D&C or infection, released to restore the cavity.
👶
Infertility & repeated IVF failure
Checks and corrects the womb cavity before IVF; removes lost IUDs or retained tissue.

⚠️ Signs That May Need Hysteroscopy

  • ➤Very heavy or long periods
  • ➤Bleeding between periods
  • ➤Bleeding after menopause
  • ➤Difficulty getting pregnant
  • ➤Two or more miscarriages
  • ➤Repeated IVF failure
  • ➤Very light or absent periods after D&C
  • ➤Lost or stuck IUD (coil)
💡 Not every heavy period needs surgery. Hormone tablets, tranexamic acid or a hormone-releasing coil (Mirena) control bleeding in many women. A small polyp may sometimes be watched, and fibroids that are deep in the muscle wall need different treatment (laparoscopic myomectomy, medicines or embolisation) rather than hysteroscopy.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Transvaginal ultrasoundShows polyps, fibroids and lining thickness inside the womb.
3D ultrasound or saline sonographyBetter view of the womb shape – helps diagnose septum and cavity problems.
MRI pelvis (if needed)Maps fibroids and checks how deep they go into the muscle.
Pap smear / HPV testChecks the cervix before the procedure.
Blood testsHaemoglobin (for anaemia), blood group, clotting, sugar, thyroid and infection screening.
Pregnancy testConfirms you are not pregnant before the procedure.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Hysteroscopy procedure steps
1
Free opinion
Your ultrasound and reports are reviewed by a gynaecologist, who confirms what the hysteroscopy should treat.
2
Consultation and tests
On arrival, the gynaecologist examines you and repeats the ultrasound if needed.
3
Timing
The procedure is ideally planned just after your period ends, when the lining is thin.
4
Anaesthesia
Usually short general anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia; simple diagnostic cases may need only mild sedation.
5
Inserting the hysteroscope
The thin camera is passed gently through the cervix – no cuts are made on the abdomen.
6
Expanding the womb
Saline fluid gently fills the womb so the surgeon can see clearly.
7
Treatment
Polyps, fibroids, septum or adhesions are removed with a resectoscope or fine instruments.
8
Biopsy
Removed tissue is sent to the laboratory for testing.
9
Recovery
You rest for a few hours; mild cramps and light bleeding are normal.
10
Discharge
You go home after the 2-day stay with medicines and advice; the biopsy report follows in 3–5 days.

⚖️ Types of Hysteroscopy

TypeWhat is doneBest for
Diagnostic hysteroscopyCamera look inside the womb with biopsyUnexplained bleeding, infertility work-up
Hysteroscopic polypectomyRemoval of lining polypsPolyps causing bleeding or infertility
Hysteroscopic myomectomyShaving out of fibroids bulging into the cavitySubmucous fibroids (type 0, 1 and some type 2)
Septum resection / adhesiolysisCutting a uterine septum or releasing scar tissueRecurrent miscarriage, Asherman syndrome
Endometrial ablationDestroying the womb lining to reduce periodsHeavy periods in women who do not want more children
📊 Hysteroscopy is considered the gold standard for examining the uterine cavity (ESHRE/ESGE and ACOG guidance), and hysteroscopic removal of polyps and submucous fibroids improves heavy bleeding in about 80–95% of women.

  • •Uterine perforation (small hole in the womb wall) – about 0.5–1%, usually heals by itself
  • •Fluid overload during long operative procedures – rare, carefully monitored
  • •Heavy bleeding – rare
  • •Re-formation of adhesions after Asherman treatment – may need repeat procedure
  • •Anaesthesia reactions – very rare

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ How much does hysteroscopy cost in India?
Operative hysteroscopy starts from about USD 3,500 with this package, including a 2-day hospital stay. A simple diagnostic hysteroscopy as a day-care procedure costs less, about USD 700–1,200.
➤ How long will I stay in hospital and in India?
The hospital stay is 2 days. Most women stay in India for about 5–7 days in total for tests, the procedure and a final review.
➤ Is hysteroscopy painful?
It is done under anaesthesia, so you do not feel pain during it. Afterwards, mild period-like cramps and light bleeding for a few days are normal.
➤ Are there any cuts or scars?
No. The camera goes through the natural opening of the cervix, so there are no cuts on the abdomen.
➤ Will hysteroscopy help me get pregnant?
If your infertility is caused by polyps, fibroids inside the cavity, a septum or adhesions, correcting them can improve the chance of pregnancy and reduce miscarriage. Your doctor will explain your chances based on your full fertility tests.
➤ When can I try to conceive after hysteroscopy?
Usually after 1–2 normal periods, or as your doctor advises. After septum or adhesion surgery, the doctor may want a check before you try.
➤ When can I go back to work?
Most women return to desk work in 2–5 days.
➤ What are the risks?
Risks are low. Infection occurs in about 1% and a small hole in the womb (perforation) in about 0.5–1%, which usually heals on its own.
➤ When is the best time for hysteroscopy?
Usually in the first half of the cycle, just after the period ends, when the lining is thin and the view is clear.
➤ Can women after menopause have hysteroscopy?
Yes. Bleeding after menopause should always be checked, and hysteroscopy with biopsy is the best way to find the cause.
➤ Can someone travel with me?
Yes. One attendant (or more) can accompany you, and we provide visa invitation letters.
➤ What reports should I send?
Send your pelvic ultrasound, MRI if done, blood tests and fertility history. A gynaecologist reviews them free in 48–72 hours.
➤ What follow-up is needed at home?
A check of your periods and, if needed, an ultrasound after 1–2 cycles. Our team can arrange an online review with your doctor.
➤ Is an interpreter provided?
Yes. Free interpreters for Arabic, French and Portuguese (plus English) and a female coordinator on request are available.
