He diagnoses and manages kidney diseases in adults and children, including acute kidney injury, acute-on-chronic and chronic kidney disease, rapidly progressive renal failure and kidney involvement in acutely ill patients. He emphasises early diagnosis, prevention and kidney disease screening to protect long-term kidney health.
His procedural work includes femoral and jugular catheter placement for haemodialysis and acute peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion, and he cares for patients on acute peritoneal dialysis and CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, a home-based dialysis method). He carries out pre-transplant evaluation of kidney recipients and donors and provides long-term post-transplant care, and has a special interest in paediatric nephrology, managing children with kidney failure through conservative treatment, dialysis and transplantation.
Dr. Vijay Varma has published on postpartum and pregnancy-related acute kidney injury, histological patterns of adult-onset nephrotic syndrome, hypertension in chronic kidney disease, IgA-dominant post-staphylococcal glomerulonephritis and unusual infections and complications in kidney transplant recipients. He won the Best Paper Award at the Annual NAK Conference, Chikmagalur (2015) and second prize for paper presentation at the NAK Conference, Bengaluru (2014), and consults in English, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada.
