His main area of expertise is renal transplantation, including complex ABO-incompatible transplants, where donor and recipient blood groups do not match, and HLA-sensitised transplants in patients with pre-existing antibodies. These transplants need careful desensitisation and close monitoring, and they allow many more patients to receive a kidney from a willing family donor.
He manages acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and pregnancy-related kidney injury, and performs renal biopsy, tunnelled and non-tunnelled jugular dialysis catheter insertion, and peritoneal dialysis. His post-doctoral dissertation studied the epidemiology of BK virus among renal transplant recipients at a tertiary care centre.
Dr. Bharadwaj Batchu has given an oral presentation at ISOT on BK viraemia and BK virus nephropathy in post-transplant patients in India, and an oral case presentation at the Kolkata Nephrology Forum on ABO-incompatible renal transplantation in an HIV-positive patient. He is a full member of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation and consults in Telugu, English and Hindi.
