He was directly involved in setting up the Haematology Department at L.T.M.G. Hospital and L.T.M. Medical College, Mumbai in 1983, and has 30 years of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience with Mumbai University.
- His clinical work covers the full spectrum of blood disorders, including anaemias, thalassaemia and other haemoglobinopathies, bleeding and clotting disorders, and blood cancers such as leukaemia. He received a W.H.O. Fellowship for Community Control of Thalassaemia in Cyprus in 1983, was Founder Member and Secretary of the Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Society of Mumbai (1983-2007), and was a member of the international group on the development of an oral iron chelator for thalassaemia patients (1990-1994).
- Dr. Agarwal has authored 136 articles in national and international journals (1977-2016). He was Founder Editor of the Indian Journal of Haematology, the first quarterly journal in the subject in the country, and later served as its Emeritus Editor. His books include 'Living with Thalassemia' (1986), the first Indian book on thalassaemia for students, practitioners and patients, as well as laboratory manuals for anaemia (1987) and coagulation disorders (1992), and the Recent Advances in Haematology and Haemato-Oncology series.
- His contributions have been recognised with the Manorama Sapre Oration of the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (1988), the Dr. J.G. Parekh Oration (1997-98), the Dr. V.S. Prayag Memorial Oration (2000), the Dr. K.T. Dholakia Oration (2001), and an award for Excellence in Teaching from J.N. Medical College, Belgaum (1998). He has also organised numerous national conferences and CMEs on thalassaemia, haematology and haemato-oncology in Mumbai.
