He brings both clinical and academic experience to his practice and is experienced in handling haematological emergencies.
He is skilled in both allogeneic and autologous transplants using bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells. Autologous transplants use the patient's own stem cells, typically for myeloma and lymphoma, while allogeneic transplants use stem cells from a matched or haploidentical donor and are used for leukaemias, aplastic anaemia, thalassaemia and other bone marrow failure syndromes.
His clinical interests include anaemias, thalassaemia, sickle cell anaemia, aplastic anaemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, platelet disorders, bleeding and clotting disorders, and thrombotic and immune deficiency disorders. He also treats blood cancers such as acute and chronic leukaemias, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, chronic myeloid leukaemia and myeloproliferative disorders.
Dr. Karuna Kumar has published on minimal residual disease assessment in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (Blood, 2017), haploidentical stem cell transplantation with TCR alpha/beta and CD19 depletion (Transplantation, 2018) and haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and has written a chapter on ALL risk stratification for an Indian paediatric haematology-oncology textbook. He is a lifetime member of the Mumbai Haematology Group and the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, and consults in English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
