Know More About Procedure & Surgery
Colonoscopy with Polyp Removal (Polypectomy) in India
Colon polyps are small growths on the inner lining of the large bowel. Some types (adenomas) can slowly turn into bowel cancer over many years. Removing them during a colonoscopy – called polypectomy – is one of the most effective ways to prevent colorectal cancer. Large or flat polyps can be removed without surgery using EMR or ESD.
🔬 What is a Polypectomy?
A polypectomy is the removal of a polyp from the inside of the colon or rectum during a colonoscopy. The doctor passes a thin, flexible tube with a camera through the back passage and uses small tools – usually a wire loop called a snare – to cut the polyp off. You are sedated and there is no cut on the skin.
Most polyps are small and are removed in minutes. Large or flat polyps (20 mm or more) can be removed by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) or, in selected cases, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), which often avoids bowel surgery. Every polyp is sent to the laboratory (histopathology) to see what type it is and whether it was removed completely. If you only need a diagnostic colonoscopy with biopsy, see our Colonoscopic Biopsy package.

⚠️ Symptoms to Discuss With a Doctor
- ➤Blood in or on the stool

- ➤Persistent tummy pain or bloating
- ➤A feeling of not emptying the bowel
- ➤Mucus in the stool
- ➤Often no symptoms at all – most polyps are found on screening
🔬 Tests Before the Procedure
| Test | Why it is done |
|---|---|
| Consultation with gastroenterologist | Reviews symptoms, previous reports and medicines. |
| Blood count and clotting tests (PT/INR) | Checks bleeding risk before cutting a polyp. |
| Review of blood thinners | Aspirin, clopidogrel or anticoagulants may need to be paused with your doctor’s advice. |
| Kidney function and sugar | Safety of the bowel-preparation drink and sedation. |
| ECG (age or heart disease) | Fitness for sedation or anaesthesia. |
| Previous colonoscopy images and biopsy slides | Helps plan EMR or ESD for a known large polyp. |

🌱 Recovery After Polypectomy
🏆 Results & Success
| Outcome | Result |
|---|---|
| Colorectal cancer deaths after adenoma removal (National Polyp Study) | About 53% lower |
| Small polyps removed completely at one session | Most cases |
| Large polyps cleared by EMR (may need a check-up colonoscopy) | Most cases; small remnants are treated at follow-up |
🩹 Risks & Possible Complications
- •Bloating and cramps – common, short-lived
- •Bleeding after polypectomy – about 1–2% overall, higher after large EMR; most stops on its own or with clips
- •Post-polypectomy syndrome (pain and fever without perforation) – uncommon
- •Perforation (a tear in the bowel wall) – rare, about 1 in 1,000 colonoscopies; higher with EMR/ESD
- •Reaction to sedation – rare
- •Polyp regrowth at the site – occasional after piecemeal EMR, so a check colonoscopy is planned
