What is Spinal depression and Fusion Surgery?

Spinal Decompression undergoes three procedures,

  • Laminectomy – where a section of bone is removed from one of your vertebrae (spinal bones) to relieve pressure on the affected nerve
  • Discectomy – where a section of a damaged disc is removed
  • Spinal fusion – where 2 or more vertebrae are joined together with a bone graft

How long the surgery takes?

The spinal Decompression and fusion surgery averagely takes 2 to 3 hours. The time of the surgery may vary based on the complexity of the surgery and the age and health of the patient. Sometimes it extended to the 6 to 7 hours.

How long it takes to recover?

Recovery of spinal fusion surgery takes longer. It is expected to the mobility level after 4 to 6 weeks. It will take more than one year for complete recovery and healing. The recovery period is based on the level of patient health before the surgery.

How long I need to stay in the hospital?

Normally it will take 1 to 4days for the patient to discharge from the hospital. Though he discharged patient will be required to take tests 1-2 times a week for one month. This may change based on the health condition of the patient.

How long the pain lasts?

After the surgery you will feel sore in the back (area of operation), doctors will provide you pain relievers. It will take nearly 6 weeks for complete recovery from the pain and tiredness of the operation.

What are the rehabilitation exercises?

After your mobility level, your doctor will recommend you walking and exercise for the back and abdomen to stabilize the spine. It is advised to follow the rehabilitation exercises with the guidance of Physical therapists

What are the nutrients to take after surgery?

Protein is the key element to take after the surgery to heal fast. It is better to take low-fat dairy products. They have high protein and also calcium and vitamin D which are good for Bones.

When the patient can take a bath?

For the first 5 days, the operated area needs to be dry. After that, you can take a bath by covering the operated area with a bandage. It is advisable not to take hot tub baths, shower, etc... For one month.

When the patient can start driving?

One can start driving if you feel relieved from the pain and by your therapist's guidance. It will take 2 to 4 weeks in Laminectomy andDiscectomy and 4 to 6 weeks in fusion surgery.

What activities shouldn’t be done after surgery?

Avoid doing hard activities like running, jogging, riding, heavy lifting, and other aerobic exercises until your doctor says. Avoid driving more than 30 minutes for the first two months.

When the patient can go for work?

You should off work for 4 to 6 weeks, after the surgery. It will take time for healing. If your work involves intense physical work it is advisable to take 3 to 5 months rest.
