A chronic subdural hematoma is a collection of old, often liquefied blood that gradually forms beneath the dura (the brain's outer membrane), usually following a minor head injury that may have been forgotten — particularly common in elderly patients and those on blood-thinning medication. As it enlarges, it can press on the brain, causing headache, confusion, weakness on one side, or drowsiness.
