📖 What is Hernia Surgery?

A hernia happens when part of the bowel or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall of the tummy (abdomen). It shows as a bulge, often in the groin or near the belly button, that may get bigger when you cough, lift or stand, and may ache. Hernias do not heal by themselves and usually grow slowly with time.

Hernia surgery (herniorrhaphy or hernioplasty) pushes the tissue back into place and closes and strengthens the weak spot, usually with a soft synthetic mesh. It can be done through small keyhole cuts (laparoscopic TEP or TAPP repair) or through one cut over the hernia (open Lichtenstein repair). Mesh repair has lowered the chance of the hernia coming back to a few percent.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
A hernia is a bulge where part of the bowel or fat pushes through a weak spot in the belly wall, often in the groin or near the belly button. In hernia repair the bulge is pushed back and the wall is closed, usually with a mesh patch.

🩺 Hernias Treated

⬇️
Inguinal hernia
The most common type, a bulge in the groin; far more common in men.
🔘
Umbilical / paraumbilical hernia
A bulge at or near the belly button, common after pregnancy and with weight gain.
✂️
Incisional hernia
A hernia through the scar of an earlier abdominal operation.
🦵
Femoral hernia
A bulge in the upper thigh below the groin crease; more common in women and has a higher risk of strangulation.
↔️
Epigastric hernia / divarication
A bulge in the upper abdomen above the belly button, sometimes with separation of the abdominal muscles.
🔁
Recurrent and bilateral hernias
Hernias that came back after a previous repair or appear on both sides; laparoscopic repair is often preferred.

⚠️ Symptoms That May Need Hernia Surgery

  • ➤A bulge in the groin, scrotum or near the belly button
  • ➤Bulge that grows when coughing or lifting
  • ➤Aching or burning at the bulge
  • ➤Heaviness or dragging feeling in the groin
  • ➤Pain on long standing or walking
  • ➤Bulge that no longer goes back in
  • ➤Sudden severe pain, vomiting or a red, hard bulge (emergency)
  • ➤A bulge near an old surgery scar
💡 Small hernias with no symptoms may be watched. For men with a small, painless inguinal hernia, careful 'watchful waiting' is a safe option, although many go on to need surgery within a few years. Trusses or belts only hold the bulge and do not cure it. A hernia that becomes painful, hard or cannot be pushed back needs urgent surgery.

🔬 Tests Before Treatment

TestWhy it is done
Clinical examinationThe surgeon examines the bulge standing and lying down and while you cough.
Ultrasound of the abdomen / groinConfirms the hernia and its contents when the bulge is small or unclear.
CT scan of the abdomenUsed for large incisional or complex hernias to measure the defect and plan the repair.
Blood testsBlood count, sugar, kidney and liver tests and clotting profile before surgery.
ECG and chest X-rayChecks the heart and lungs before anaesthesia, especially over age 40.
Anaesthesia check-upThe anaesthetist reviews your health and plans general or spinal anaesthesia.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Hernia Surgery procedure steps
1
Consultation and tests
The surgeon examines you, reviews scans and blood tests, and decides between laparoscopic and open repair.
2
Admission
You are admitted on the morning of surgery after fasting for about 6–8 hours.
3
Anaesthesia
General anaesthesia for laparoscopic repair; spinal or local anaesthesia may be used for open repair.
4
Access
Three small 5–10 mm cuts (laparoscopic) or one 6–8 cm cut over the hernia (open).
5
Reducing the hernia
The bowel or fat in the hernia sac is gently returned to the abdomen.
6
Mesh placement
A sterile mesh is placed over the weak area to reinforce the wall.
7
Fixation
The mesh is fixed with tacks, glue or a few stitches, or left flat in place where suitable.
8
Closure
The small cuts are closed with dissolving stitches or skin glue.
9
Recovery on the ward
You walk the same evening, eat normally and get pain relief by mouth.
10
Discharge
Discharged after about 3 days in a single room with wound care and activity advice.

⚖️ Types & Techniques

TechniqueWhat is doneBest for
Laparoscopic TEP repairMesh placed through keyhole cuts in the layer outside the abdominal liningBilateral and recurrent inguinal hernias, quick return to work
Laparoscopic TAPP repairMesh placed through keyhole cuts from inside the abdomenInguinal hernias, especially when the diagnosis is uncertain
Open Lichtenstein mesh repairMesh placed through one cut over the groinSingle inguinal hernias, older patients, spinal anaesthesia
Laparoscopic IPOM / eTEP repairLarge mesh placed laparoscopically for belly-wall herniasUmbilical, incisional and ventral hernias
Robotic hernia repairRobot-assisted keyhole repair with precise suturingComplex incisional and recurrent hernias
📊 The HerniaSurge international guidelines (Hernia 2018) recommend mesh repair for adult inguinal hernias, with laparoscopic TEP/TAPP or open Lichtenstein repair giving recurrence rates of about 1–5% in experienced hands; laparoscopic repair causes less chronic pain and faster return to work.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

➤ How much does hernia surgery cost in India?
Hernia surgery in India starts from about USD 3,020, including 3 days in a single room. Hernias on both sides, large incisional hernias or robotic surgery cost more, about USD 3,500–8,000.
➤ Is laparoscopic or open surgery better?
Both work well. Laparoscopic repair has smaller cuts, less pain and a faster return to work, and is best for both-sided or recurrent hernias. Open repair is good for single hernias and patients who should avoid general anaesthesia.
➤ How long does the surgery take?
Usually 1–2 hours, depending on the type and whether one or both sides are repaired.
➤ How long do I need to stay in India?
About 7–10 days: 1–2 days for tests, 3 days in hospital and a few days of rest before the final check.
➤ Is mesh safe?
Yes. Modern hernia meshes have been used safely in millions of patients and lower the chance of the hernia coming back. Mesh problems such as infection are rare (under 1–2%).
➤ Will the hernia come back?
With mesh repair, about 1–5% of hernias come back over the long term. Avoiding heavy lifting early, stopping smoking and controlling weight lower this risk.
➤ Is the surgery painful?
You feel nothing during surgery. Afterwards, soreness for a few days is normal and is controlled with tablets.
➤ When can I return to work?
Desk work after about 1–2 weeks for laparoscopic repair and 2–3 weeks for open repair. Heavy physical work after 4–6 weeks.
➤ Can I wait instead of having surgery?
A small, painless groin hernia in a man can be watched. Femoral hernias and painful hernias should be repaired because of the risk of strangulation, which is an emergency.
➤ Can children and elderly patients have hernia surgery?
Yes. Children's hernias are repaired by paediatric surgeons, usually without mesh. Older patients can often have open repair under spinal or local anaesthesia.
➤ When can I fly home?
Usually 5–7 days after laparoscopic surgery, after a final wound check.
➤ Can a family member come with me?
Yes. One or two attendants can get a medical attendant visa with our hospital invitation letter.
➤ What reports should I send for a free opinion?
A photo of the bulge, any ultrasound or CT report, previous surgery details and your list of medicines and health problems.
➤ What follow-up is needed after I return home?
Wound check with your local doctor in 7–10 days and an online review with our surgeon. Report any new bulge, fever or wound redness.
