📖 What is Capsule Endoscopy?
The small intestine is the long middle part of the gut – about 6 metres – between the stomach and the large bowel. Normal endoscopy (through the mouth) and colonoscopy (through the back passage) cannot reach most of it. So bleeding, ulcers or tumours hidden in the small intestine are often missed, even after many tests.
In capsule endoscopy (also called video capsule endoscopy or pill cam), you swallow a capsule about the size of a large vitamin tablet. It contains a tiny camera, light and battery. As it moves naturally through the gut, it takes 2–6 pictures every second – over 50,000 images – and sends them to a small recorder worn on a belt. A gastroenterologist then studies the video. The capsule is disposable and passes out in the stool, usually within 1–3 days. No tubes, sedation or hospital admission are needed.

💡 Capsule endoscopy is usually done after normal upper endoscopy and colonoscopy. It cannot take biopsies or treat bleeding. If a narrowing (stricture) is suspected, a CT/MR enterography or patency capsule is done first; if a lesion is found, double-balloon enteroscopy may be needed to treat it.
