🎈 NON-SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS — INDIA

Gastric Balloon (Intragastric Balloon) in India

A gastric balloon is a soft silicone balloon placed in the stomach to make you feel full sooner and eat less. It is placed through the mouth with a camera (endoscopy) or swallowed as a capsule, so there are no cuts. Combined with a diet and activity programme, it helps people lose weight over about 6 months.

🎈 What is a Gastric Balloon?

An intragastric balloon is a soft, expandable silicone balloon that sits in the stomach for a set time. Once filled with sterile saline (usually about 400–700 mL), it takes up space, so you feel full after smaller meals and hunger is reduced. It is a temporary, non-surgical treatment: nothing in the stomach is cut, stapled or re-routed.

Most balloons stay for about 6 months and are then removed with a short endoscopy. Some newer balloons are swallowed as a capsule and empty on their own after about 4 months, then pass naturally. The balloon works best as part of a programme with a dietitian; the eating habits you learn are what keep the weight off after it is removed.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
Think of the balloon as a temporary “space-filler” in your stomach. Because part of the stomach is already full, you feel satisfied after a small plate of food. Over 6 months you learn new eating habits, and then the balloon is taken out or passes away on its own.

🩺 Who Is It For?

⚖️
BMI about 30–40
Adults with obesity who have not lost enough weight with diet and exercise alone.
🚫
Not ready for surgery
People who do not want, or are not yet suitable for, sleeve gastrectomy or bypass.
🏗️
Bridge before surgery
Very high BMI patients who need to lose weight first to make surgery or another operation safer.
🩹
Weight-related conditions
Pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver or joint pain linked to weight.
🤝
Committed to follow-up
Willing to follow the diet programme and attend (online) dietitian reviews for 6–12 months.
✈️
Short trip
Suits international patients who can stay about a week and plan the removal visit.

⚠️ When a Balloon Is Not Suitable

  • ➤Previous stomach or weight-loss surgery
  • ➤Large hiatus hernia
  • ➤Active stomach ulcer or bleeding
  • ➤Inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s
  • ➤Pregnancy or planning pregnancy during treatment
  • ➤Need for long-term blood thinners or regular anti-inflammatory painkillers
  • ➤Uncontrolled psychiatric or eating disorders
  • ➤Alcohol or drug dependence
💡 A balloon is not a cure on its own. Weight returns if eating habits do not change after removal. For a BMI above about 40, or when diabetes is severe, a surgeon may advise sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass instead, which give larger and longer-lasting weight loss. See our Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass packages.

🔬 Tests Before the Balloon

TestWhy it is done
Consultation with bariatric specialist and dietitianConfirms the balloon is the right choice and plans the diet programme.
Height, weight, BMI and waistBaseline for measuring results.
Blood tests (blood count, sugar/HbA1c, liver, kidney, thyroid)Checks overall health and weight-related conditions.
Upper GI endoscopy (often at placement)Looks for ulcers, hernia or other problems before placing the balloon.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Gastric balloon procedure steps
1
Consultation
The specialist and dietitian review your weight history, health and goals.
2
Fasting
No food for about 8–12 hours before placement.
3
Sedation
For endoscopic balloons you are given sedation; you breathe on your own and feel little.
4
Check the stomach
A thin camera (endoscope) checks the food pipe and stomach.
5
Place the balloon
The empty balloon is passed through the mouth into the stomach.
6
Fill the balloon
It is filled with sterile saline, often coloured blue so a leak can be noticed.
7
Recovery
You rest for a few hours; most people go back to the hotel the same day.
8
Settling-in days
Nausea, vomiting and cramps are common for 3–7 days and are treated with medicines and fluids.
9
Diet stages
Liquids for about a week, then soft food, then small regular meals.
10
Removal
At about 6 months the balloon is emptied and removed by endoscopy (swallowable types pass naturally).

📚 Evidence note: A systematic review and meta-analysis by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (Abu Dayyeh et al., Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 2015) found that the most widely used fluid-filled balloon led to an average loss of roughly 12–13% of total body weight at 6 months, with early removal for intolerance in about 7.5% of patients. Which balloon brands are available differs between hospitals and changes over time; your hospital confirms the device before you travel.

➤ How much weight will I lose?
On average about 12–13% of body weight at 6 months with a fluid-filled balloon, if you follow the diet plan.
➤ Is it surgery?
No. It is placed through the mouth with an endoscope under sedation, or swallowed as a capsule. There are no cuts.
➤ How long do I need to stay in India?
Usually about 5–7 days, to get through the first days of nausea before flying.
➤ How is the balloon removed?
Endoscopic balloons are removed by a short endoscopy at about 6 months. Swallowable balloons empty and pass naturally.
➤ Can the balloon be removed in my own country?
Often yes, by a gastroenterologist who does balloon removals. Confirm this before placement, or plan a short return trip to India.
➤ Is it painful?
Placement is not painful under sedation. Nausea and cramps are common for 3–7 days and are controlled with medicines.
➤ Who should not have a balloon?
People with previous stomach surgery, a large hiatus hernia, active ulcers, pregnancy, or who need long-term blood thinners.
➤ What can I eat with the balloon?

➤ Will I regain the weight?
Weight can return if old eating habits come back. The follow-up programme helps you keep the loss.
➤ Balloon or sleeve gastrectomy?
A balloon is temporary and suits BMI about 30–40. Sleeve gastrectomy gives larger, permanent weight loss for higher BMI or diabetes.
➤ Can I fly with a balloon?
Yes, once the first days of nausea have settled and the doctor confirms you are fit to fly.
➤ Can I have a second balloon?
Sometimes, after a gap, if the doctor agrees. Many patients instead move on to surgery if more weight loss is needed.
➤ Do you provide an interpreter?
Yes. Free interpreters for Arabic, French, Russian and other languages, plus a coordinator for all hospital visits.
