Know More About Procedure & Surgery

An esophageal stent placement procedure is a relatively safe outpatient procedure that involves placing a folded-up tube (stent) in the esophagus to support and open a blockage:

The Purpose of tube is placed in your esophagus (throat) to keep open a blocked area. The tube helps you swallow solids and liquids. Your esophagus is the muscular tube connecting the back of your mouth to your stomach. When you swallow, the muscles of your esophagus contract.

  1. The patient is put under general anesthesia or sedation.
  2. A surgeon or doctor uses an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera and light, to look into the esophagus.
  3. If the esophagus is narrow, the doctor may widen it with balloons or soft tubes before placing the stent.
  4. A long, thin tube (catheter) is inserted down the back of the mouth and into the esophagus.
  5. The stent is placed over the catheter across the blockage using fluoroscopy, a real-time x-ray.
  6. The catheter is removed and the stent is left in place

After the procedure, the patient may need to stay in the hospital for a day or two to ensure they can eat and drink comfortably. They may also experience chest pain or pressure as the stent expands, but this usually subsides after a few days. For the first few days, the patient should eat a soft or pureed diet, but can usually return to their normal diet after a couple of days.

Some risks and complications associated with esophageal stent placement include:

  • Bleeding
  • Throat soreness
  • Stent migration
  • Tumor growth into the stent
  • Esophageal perforation
  • Heartburn or acid reflux

Always consult with a qualified thoracic surgeon to discuss the most appropriate treatment for your specific condition.
