📖 What is Hypospadias?
Hypospadias is a condition present from birth in boys, in which the opening of the urine tube (the urethra) is not at the tip of the penis but on its underside. It affects about 1 in every 200–300 baby boys. The opening may be near the tip (distal, the most common type), along the middle of the shaft, or near the scrotum (proximal, more severe). The penis may also bend downward (chordee) and the foreskin is often incomplete, looking like a hood.
Hypospadias repair (also called urethroplasty) is surgery to move the opening to the tip of the penis, straighten any bend and rebuild a normal-looking penis. This allows the child to pass urine standing with a straight stream, and later allows normal sexual function. Most distal cases are fixed in one operation; severe proximal cases often need two stages about 6 months apart.

💡 Very mild hypospadias with a straight penis and normal stream may not need surgery. The paediatric surgeon decides after examination. Important: do not circumcise a baby with hypospadias before seeing a surgeon, because the foreskin is often used to rebuild the urethra.
