His surgical work includes cytoreductive surgery for ovarian carcinoma, staging laparotomy, radical (Wertheim's) hysterectomy, radical vulvectomy with groin node dissection, pelvic exenteration and pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection. He also offers colposcopy, cervical screening and excision procedures for precancerous cervical lesions, along with counselling for families at high hereditary cancer risk.
- Dr. Kulkarni has a strong interest in fertility-sparing surgery for young women with early cancers. He is credited with the first reported fertility-sparing radical trachelectomy for cervical cancer in India and the first reported robotic-assisted radical trachelectomy in India, procedures that remove the cervix and surrounding tissue while preserving the uterus and the possibility of future pregnancy.
- He has 12 publications from his training period and numerous papers in international journals, along with book chapters in gynaecology and obstetrics, and is an invited faculty member at national and international conferences. He is a member of the International Gynecological Cancer Society, the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology, the Association of Gynecologic Oncologists of India, the Mumbai Obstetrics & Gynecological Society and FOGSI.
