About Dr. Mandar Nadkarni [MBBS, MS, DNB]

Dr. Mandar Nadkarni is Breast and GI Surgical Oncologist and Currently Working as Director (Group), Breast Oncology in the Surgical Oncology Department at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Andheri West, Mumbai, India.

He is having more than 23 years of experience in the field of Surgical Oncology.

He has completed his MBBS, MS and DNB, followed by a visiting observership in oncoplastic surgery and implant reconstruction at Centre Oscar Lambret, France.

Profile Highlights :

  • Dr. Nadkarni helped establish the Breast Care Unit at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in 2009, modelled on EUSOMA guidelines and covering the full pathway from screening and diagnosis to multimodal treatment and palliative care. The unit has performed more than 9,500 breast cancer procedures over 17 years, and he personally has treated over 7,500 breast cancer patients and performed more than 500 oncoplastic surgeries.
  • He introduced oncoplastic techniques as standard care at the unit and later added chest wall perforator flaps for reconstruction. His surgical repertoire includes breast conservation and mastectomy, whole-breast reconstruction including free flaps, nipple-areola-sparing and subcutaneous mastectomy with reconstruction, and prophylactic bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction for BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers. He also treats gastrointestinal cancers and set up a port clinic for central venous access devices.
  • In 2009 he established a sentinel node biopsy programme in Mumbai, later adopting dual-technique and ICG-based identification and radiation-based axillary management for selected node-positive patients. He uses hookwire and intraoperative ultrasound localisation to excise impalpable breast lesions accurately, an approach he has used in over 1,500 patients.
  • Dr. Nadkarni has more than 21 publications, including landmark work on breast conservation surgery without preoperative mammography (Breast, 2006), a randomised trial of preoperative depot progesterone in operable breast cancer and a study on axillary seroma formation (ANZ Journal of Surgery, 2007).
