🔬 GI DIAGNOSTIC PACKAGE — INDIA

Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy / OGD) in India

An upper GI endoscopy is a short camera test that lets a gastroenterologist look directly at the lining of your food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It finds the cause of acidity, pain, bleeding, swallowing problems and anaemia, and many problems can be treated in the same sitting.

🔬 What is an Upper GI Endoscopy?

Upper GI endoscopy is also called gastroscopy, OGD (oesophago-gastro-duodenoscopy) or EGD. A thin, flexible tube about the width of a little finger, with a light and camera at its tip (an endoscope), is passed through the mouth. The images appear on a screen so the doctor can see ulcers, inflammation, bleeding points, narrowing or growths.

Small, painless tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken to test for Helicobacter pylori infection, coeliac disease, Barrett’s oesophagus or cancer. The same endoscope can also treat problems: stopping a bleeding ulcer, banding swollen veins (varices), stretching a narrowed food pipe or removing a polyp. For the small intestine beyond the duodenum, see our Capsule Endoscopy package; for bile duct problems, see ERCP.

🖼️ Understand It in Pictures

💡 In simple words
The doctor gently guides a soft camera tube through your mouth, down the food pipe and into the stomach – like looking inside a tunnel with a torch. It takes about 10 minutes. With sedation most people remember very little, and you can breathe normally throughout.

🩺 Why the Test Is Done

🔥
Acidity and heartburn
Reflux not settling with medicines, or new symptoms after age 50–55.
🤢
Stomach pain and vomiting
Persistent indigestion, ulcer symptoms or repeated vomiting.
🩸
Bleeding or anaemia
Vomiting blood, black stools or iron-deficiency anaemia.
🩺
Swallowing problems
Food sticking, painful swallowing or narrowing of the food pipe.
🦠
Liver disease
Screening and banding of varices in cirrhosis or portal hypertension.
🍳
Coeliac and H. pylori
Biopsies to confirm coeliac disease or H. pylori infection.

⚠️ Warning Symptoms That Need Endoscopy Soon

  • ➤Difficulty swallowing that is getting worse
  • ➤Vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds
  • ➤Black, tarry stools
  • ➤Unexplained weight loss
  • ➤Persistent vomiting
  • ➤Iron-deficiency anaemia
  • ➤A lump or mass in the upper tummy
  • ➤New indigestion after age 55
💡 Not everyone with acidity needs an endoscopy. Younger people with typical reflux and no warning signs are often treated first with lifestyle changes and acid-reducing medicines, or tested for H. pylori with a breath or stool test. Your gastroenterologist decides from your symptoms and history.

🔬 Before the Test

StepWhy it is done
Consultation with gastroenterologistConfirms why the test is needed and whether treatment may be done at the same time.
Fasting about 6 hours (clear water up to 2 hours)An empty stomach gives a clear view and is safer.
Review of blood thinners and diabetes medicinesAdjusted with your doctor if biopsies or treatment are planned.
Blood count, clotting and liver tests (if bleeding or liver disease)Plans safe treatment such as banding.
ECG and anaesthesia review (if sedation/anaesthesia)Fitness for sedation.

🏥 The Procedure — Step by Step

Upper GI endoscopy procedure steps
1
Check-in
Day-care admission; consent and a short nursing check.
2
Choice of comfort
Throat numbing spray, light sedation through a drip, or anaesthesia.
3
Positioning
You lie on your left side; a plastic mouth guard protects your teeth.
4
Passing the scope
The endoscope is passed through the mouth; you can breathe normally.
5
Oesophagus
The food pipe is checked for inflammation, Barrett’s, varices or narrowing.
6
Stomach
Air is used to open the stomach so the whole lining can be seen.
7
Duodenum
The first part of the small intestine is examined.
8
Biopsy or treatment
Samples are taken or treatment is given if needed.
9
Recovery
You rest for 30–60 minutes; throat may feel sore and tummy bloated.
10
Results
The doctor explains the findings; biopsy results take about 3–5 days.

📚 Evidence note: Upper GI endoscopy is the standard test for alarm symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, bleeding or weight loss (NICE guideline NG12 on suspected cancer; British Society of Gastroenterology guidance). Serious complications after a diagnostic endoscopy are rare; the risk is somewhat higher when treatment such as dilatation or banding is performed.

About USD 150–300 for a diagnostic test and USD 250–450 with biopsies for international patients. Treatment during endoscopy costs more.
➤ Is the test painful?
It is uncomfortable rather than painful. A throat spray or sedation keeps you comfortable, and it takes about 10–15 minutes.
➤ Will I be asleep?
You can choose throat spray only, light sedation (sleepy and relaxed) or anaesthesia. The doctor advises what suits you.
➤ How long do I need to stay in India?
Usually 3–5 days, including consultation, the test and the biopsy result.
➤ Do I need to fast?
Yes. No food for about 6 hours and only clear water up to 2 hours before the test.
➤ Can I breathe during the test?
Yes. The tube goes into the food pipe, not the windpipe, so breathing is normal.
➤ When will I get the results?
The doctor explains what was seen straight after the test. Biopsy results take about 3–5 days.
➤ Can I have upper and lower endoscopy together?
Yes. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy can be done in one session under one sedation.
➤ What is the difference between endoscopy and capsule endoscopy?
Upper endoscopy sees the food pipe, stomach and duodenum and can take biopsies; capsule endoscopy is a swallowed camera for the small intestine.
➤ Is it safe?
Yes. Serious complications are rare. The risk is a little higher when treatment such as stretching is done.
➤ Can ulcers be treated during the test?
Bleeding ulcers can be treated with injections, clips or heat during the endoscopy.
➤ When can I eat after the test?
After about an hour, when the throat numbness has gone. Start with water and light food.
➤ Do I need someone with me?
Yes, if you have sedation, an adult should accompany you back to the hotel. Our coordinator can help.
➤ Do you provide an interpreter?
Yes. Free interpreters for Arabic, French, Russian and other languages, plus a coordinator for all hospital visits.
