📖 What is Lung Cancer and VATS Lobectomy?
Lung cancer starts when cells in the lung grow out of control. About 85% of cases are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), such as adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Smoking is the biggest cause, but non-smokers can also get it, often linked to gene changes such as EGFR or ALK. The right lung has three parts (lobes) and the left has two. When the cancer is found early and has not spread widely, surgery offers the best chance of cure.
A lobectomy removes the lobe containing the cancer along with nearby lymph nodes. In VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery), the surgeon works through 1–3 small cuts (1–4 cm) using a camera, without spreading the ribs. This means less pain, a shorter stay and faster return to normal life than open surgery (thoracotomy). After surgery, the tumour board decides if you need chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy.

💡 Not every lung cancer can be treated with surgery. Cancers that have spread widely are treated with chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or radiotherapy.
